    What's your biggest MTBR peeve?

    Hey, it's a free site, I know.

But post yer b!tches about it here anyways.

My big problem is after posting a response to a post, it takes me to see what I just posted. I don't wanna go there, I want to go back to where I was in the thread!

Cheese & rice, got all muddy.

I'm not saying that you personally do this but...

people who do not read the complete thread before posting and respond to a post that has been already answered or is completely stale. Like suggesting what the OP should buy XXX product after the OP has already made a decision and already bought either XXX or YYY product.

I hate that it's default in Hybrid Mode, since I like the Linear mode.

Coming from founding and running one of the top US forums for another sport I can probably comment a little bit.

#1. I've found the page load in general is slow and the pages are pulling various ads, code and banners and as the pages (in the forum) load it "steps" down the page a little bit and it seems to always do it twice in succession as the page loads. Which means if you load the "NorCal" forum (for example) , and you see a topic that interests you, if you try to click on it too soon, chances are goods you'll be sent to the next topic down, as the page is loading slow and by the time it registers your click, the page formatting has changed, so your click is misread.

#2. It's running vBulletin, which has some advantages I suppose over PhpBB, but PhpBB is faster, can be much more stylish (depending on who the webmaster is and their skills, is less clunky and is open-source. The open-source nature provides for loads of cool mods as well.

    The OP said:

"My big problem is after posting a response to a post, it takes me to see what I just posted. I don't wanna go there, I want to go back to where I was in the thread!"

PhpBB will always display two options after posting: 1. Take me back the topic I just posted in. 2. Take me back to the forum the topic is in.

#3. Sorry, but the whole 'rep' and 'rep power' thing is just gay. We do ranks which simply give credit to a users participation which is based on their post count, nothing more. The reasoning is that if someone is a frequent user/poster, chances are good they add usefulness, knowledge, and participation to the forum. It's unlikely that someone who has a high post count will not have much to offer. You're shouldn't be competing with other users on the quality of helpfulness of posts, people should be smart enough to figure out themselves if something is funny, helpful or useful, etc. Sorry, it's dumb.

That's about it, I'm happy to have the resource and appreciate the forum.

The color scheme of the bars at the top is the same as facebook. So at work, even when I'm innocently on mtbr, which isn't frowned upon because no one knows what it is, everyone thinks I'm on facebook.

Here's a real one. Vague post titles. Like:

    Bay Area.

    Hikers.

    Need Advice.

    Specialized.

    Auburn.

    Downieville.

Seriously, people. Put a subject and a predicate together and build a cohesive statement. Otherwise, I'm not even interested in clicking to try and figure out whether you're asking a question, telling a story, or just determining that you have Tourettes.

    Hi Folks,

IMHO all rep given, positive or negative, should automatically have the user ID associated with it.

Along that line requiring the use of real names would encourage civil discourse. In the real world think of the the kind of people who hide behind an alias.

    Thanks,

    Michael

There is not a market for rep points and rep power.

In the real world you can exchange your own blood and kidney's and time on this earth for money. We should be able to do the same for these rep things.

    Ah Ok,

Folks that give you negative reps remain anon.

    I cant delete my posts.

when i press "Reply to Thread" it positions my post as a quote under the most recent post and not as a response to the thread.

The shear amount of advertizing scripts reek havoc with google+ and FF Ghostery and ad blocker making pages slow to load.

The path to and from the PM function are too far removed from the forum paths.

i have to say im not to fond of the "upgraded' RBR. Reason being is that you dont have the ability to change the layout .

    Rep and Pro Reviews

    Forums:
Rep... Especially anonymous rep / neg rep. Being able to make a comment regarding a post off the forum is ok… but the rep system is lame. (Especially since I have no rep.)

    Pro Reviews:
They are good, but I'd like to see more video reviews and more buying guides / product value summaries. Getting a rundown of specs and test results is great… but what I really want is a short summary that lists the best product at various price points.

    Example: Light Shootout
There is a ton of info… maybe too much IMO. But I have yet to find the summary that says if you have X dollars to spend, then product Y is your best bet. It is easy to see if I have a large budget, which light is the best… but for a modest budget, it is not that easy to see which is the best value.

and people who spell my "handle" wrong. THERE IS NO 2nd VOWEL

I did it that way to be cool and hip. It all started on afternoon when I was shredding at Kirkwood in 2005 I was like "bro I am totally a snow junky, this is like my 40th day here and I am the ultimate shredder" the I proceeded to drink my 40oz of PBR and when finished I was like " dude not only am I a snow junky and am just outright to cool for a vowel" So then when I decided to become snowjnky. I was so cool that day.
years later I did contemplate changing my MTBR handle to Baycat, but though that was sort of gay.

    But for realz

The worst part of MTBR has nothing to do with the forums or the website, It's when you run into somebody you know from the website and they only refer to you as your handle. I get it if you don't know their real name, but once you do use it. If I would have known I would have picked a way cooler handle like Sir Hucks-a-Lot

So if you ever do meet me my name is Santiago Jaxson not snowjnky

The search function is nearly worthless... results go way back to... January 2012. I use google to search mtbr + key words to find anything pre-2012.

Not being able to edit older posts, specifically TR's with photos where I've changed the hosting of my photos, so the links are broken and photos are no longer viewable in the TR.

My biggest peeve is that the site name is a homophone--at least if you're from the South)--for "empty beer" (see post #19).

    Cuz that's just sad...

    Non mountain biking related posts

Non mountain biking related posts, particularly in the Passion forum. They crowd out the posts I come here to read. Post your cat, new grandson photos, illegal checkpoints, relationship problems, etc. stuff somewhere else. If moderators moved them people would eventually get the message.

Let's see all the people who post up these killer rides and put in incredible yearly mileage and have the gall to post it...

Seriously, the search function is just worthless. This isn't the only board I'm on they are are horrible. Many questions maybe answered if it were actually useful.

To the board operators this is meant as constructive comments, running a board is tough and many times thankless. So thanks for the hard work in keeping the board running and all that you do.

Agreed. I am positive it's important to some people, but why? Are we on here to "gain points", or all be friendly mountain bikers? Yes. Perhaps I'm new to THIS forum and community that does not mean I am a "newb" to forums or the internet. If you want reps, I think reddit would be a better place

Agree ,heres some of the saddest ones in the passion forum which i rarely go to cause its getting too pathetic..

The most pathetic ones are as follows

    Pictures of the fall
    pictures of the snow
    pictures and my kids
    pictures and my grandkids
    passion for my birthday
    passion for being healthy
    im losing my passion
    im gaining my passion back
my friend is losing his passion
    passion for my wife
    passion for my girlfriend
    passion for long rides
    passion for short rides
    its too hot
    its too cold
    Passion for my cat

Cant we have a 'unicorn milkers and rainbow chasers forum' that all this crap can go in, then all the muppets can come together into one forum and they can be weeded out from the rest of the place?

Actually, id scrap the passion forum altogether, im passionate about that.......

All the peeps in the Norcal forum who post in the Norcal forum threads that could/should be in the General, Passion, or other places, like they are their own little mtb/interweb universe. Unless the topic is regionally oriented, why should it be in a regional forum? Just because mountain biking was invented in Norcal....sheesh.

When I first joined MTBR, product reviews were awesome I learned so much from them. Now reviews are impossible to navigate, stuff is listed without product details like msrp or weights. And what happened to editors choice?
If the product reviews was improved I think much of the annoying, "which bike kick stand is better" questions in the forums would go away.
Consciousness, that annoying time between bike rides.

I agree. They make using an iPad extremely frustrating. Just when you think the page is fully loaded and go to tap a link the entire page rescales because some ad just loaded and you end up tapping an entirely different link and have to start the whole process over. I know we need adds to pay the bills, but is there any way to integrate them without all the excessive shifting and rescaling?

I can only imagine how it is on a tablet, i typically don't use MTBR on mine.

To be more precise, normally ads load pretty quickly so it is ok, but sometimes when there is a delay fetching a particular ad or ad-image, there seems to be a rule in the page loading process that defines that before content can be loaded, ads must be displayed. So there is this order-of-loading process that gives priority to ads, and I really dont like that.

    1) The anonymous rep system is pathetic, a magnification of what's already wrong with the Internet: anonymous idiots.
    2) Ads galore, even in email notifications. Plus, a deep suspicion that these ads affect reviews. Magura is a big sponsor, and Magura brakes get glowing reviews even though they are average at best. Truth is, none come close to XT or XTR brakes.
    3) Horrible and tacky look. This site looks like it was designed in the 90s. It's fugly. You're in the Bay Area -- get a decent web designer on board.

the formatting of threads where there is a post having multiple images laid out next to each other that make the manuevering funky and requires horizontal scrolling within an inner frame to view all images. or is this just because of the way i have IE9 configured? i dont seem to have this issue in other forums.

Which means if you load the "NorCal" forum (for example) , and you see a topic that interests you, if you try to click on it too soon, chances are goods you'll be sent to the next topic down, as the page is loading slow and by the time it registers your click, the page formatting has changed, so your click is misread.

Yeah, that one is tough because the Google map of "Hogan Trail" is centered in middle of nowhere Stockton. Never says the proper name of "New Hogan Lake" which is really easy to find in Google maps. The directions in the trail review are easy to follow and figure out, but the other pieces make it confusing.

I know, I've tried to get the map changed (haven't tried hard enough, I guess). What makes it more confusing is that Hogan and the trails are known by too many names: Hogan Lake, New Hogan Reservoir, Hogan Dam, Area 51, Coyote Point, The Finch Platte Really B!tchinly Awesome Memorial Trail System, etc.

Thanks for the input. I've changed my signature so there's now a link to my website, with info on the trails. I'll try & get that map changed, too.

I agree with you actually. like I mentioned in my pm, I'll make the effort to be more informative on locations, instead of cryptic or even local slang for an area. Lot's of us are guilty of it.

The person who buzzed you probably isn't going to read the thread or care if they do, so you're *****ing out a bunch of nice people in order to hopefully ***** out one jerk.

    - It did occur to me I'm *****ing about something while doing the very thing I'm *****ing about. So I'm sorry for *****ing you guys out. My new peeve is you can't type "*****"
