    OLD POST
There's a stretch of land in Alameda, CA, known as the Jean Sweeney Open Space Park (JSOSP). It is a 22 acre parcel that used to be owned by the railroad until Jean Sweeney successfully reclaimed ownership for Alameda.

We are excited about the opportunities this space could provide to the local community including single-track multi-use trails, a pump track, walking-only trails, and picnic areas! We have worked to develop a trails plan, which is being looked at by Alameda Rec & Park and others.

If you want to see the open-space and learn about potential for trails in Alameda, attend the JSOSP Tour:

    Date: Saturday, July 13, 2013
    Time: 10:00 a.m.
Location: Wind River parking lot on Sherman St. (aka Atlantic Ave) in Alameda, CA
    See Map: http://tinyurl.com/n3aw86u

Here is a proposed Trail Plan for JSOSP that we put together for City of Alameda Rec & Park. It is not an official Alameda city document.

Bike skills course sounds fun. Other than that it seems small and would work better as a more urban park. We'll see, hopefully it rules.

Very cool. Good luck making it happen. DeLaveaga in Santa Cruz is a small park but you can easily get a full ride in if you do everything in both directions. In Alameda, you could go for a mt bike ride and then when it gets windy, go Windsurfing/Kiteboarding at Crown Beach. Just perfect.

This would be awesome! I live in Jack London Sq, so this would be even closer than Joachim Miller. How far along is this in the planning process?

Over 40 people attended the park tour last weekend. It was led by Bill Delaney, Alameda Rec & Park Commission Vice-Chair. He spoke well of the ideas for challenging trails and gave me an opportunity to show people some of the ideas. People were really interested and supportive.

We've done a lot of groundwork to get trails included in the park plan and our ideas have helped shape the discussion about recreation. Next, the Rec & Park planning committee will, this summer, make the first planning details for the park. We need to get community support for trails and biking, and get people to attend City Council and Rec & Park meetings to speak for the trails.

contact athies at yahoo dot com if you want to help with planning.

very cool - don't live in Alameda and probably wouldn't ride there, but this is great and would be a good strategic move for future open areas throughout the bay area.

Coming To Alameda: Off-road bike trails, a bike skills course and a "pump track".
We need your help to make it happen!

Trail Planning Group - Kickoff Meeting
    for the
    Jean Sweeney Open Space Park

    Time: Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2013 @ 7 p.m.
Place: "The 1400 Bar & Grill" (aka Croll's), at the corner of Webster and Central
(NOTE: This meeting will coincide with Bike Walk Alameda's social hour.)

If you want off-road bike trails in Alameda, now is the time to get involved
Just last week, the Alameda Rec & Park Dept. released a draft document which outlines basic planned JSOSP uses and layout. Many of the biking ideas we've advocated have been included in the draft plan, but this is just the beginning. Nothing is set in stone and there's no guarantee that we bikers will get anything we want. But we can get involved, shape the plan and make sure it includes the best biking experiences.
