    Skunks!

I go night riding once a week in the Sacramento area. I often see all types of wildlife including skunks.

Lately the skunks have become a bit on a problem. 9 out of 10 times when I encounter a skunk on the trail I stop and they scamper on down the trail. And they keep going and going and going down the trail for days. Most other animals run off into the woods, but skunks keep to the trail and I often have to wait until there is a fork in the trail so we can part paths.

I haven't been sprayed yet (thank God) but plenty of them raise their tails at me.

Anybody else run into these skunks who think they own the trail?
Sometimes you eat the trail, sometimes the trail eats you.

Haven't run into one on my bike, but I've run into them plenty of other times.

My experiences have been similar. It seems their innate attitude is "I am not concerned with you. I dare you to mess with me. Dude."

    Hey Mr. Widgeontrail,

They don't "think" they own the trail.....they "do" own the trail.

In your response you've wisely chosen to agree with their assessment!

One of my three dogs, on the other paw, consistently fails to acknowledge their ascendancy and we all pay the price for it.

    Take care,

    Michael

I just had to laugh at that because a friend and I on a night ride followed a &()($^ skunk for at least 1/2 mile that wouldn't get off the damn trail. Must have been a female getting us away from a den?

I'm too scared to ride at night so I don't have that problem.
Are you the one that video'd the skunk going the trail somewhere near Folsom?

Consider it not a "problem", rather a cool wildlife experience..... a big plus for a fun MTB ride......
