Damn you man! Nice haul. I used to have a spot in Soquel Demo where I'd get them pretty much every year.

Either that or the $24.00 a pound I saw at Whole Foods yesterday.

    Cheers!

I was riding uphill and noticing some mushrooms just off the trail and I thought to myself, won't be long before I see a story on the news about some family getting poisoned by eating wild mushrooms. They (your shrooms) look great and I'm sure they tasted great as well. I'm sure you know which ones to eat and which ones to avoid, I'll stick to the store and resturants due to my lack of knowledge on the subject.

Obviously eating bad mushrooms is a concern. I rarely go mushroom hunting without friends who know much more than I do. And I only go after chanterelles, which are pretty easy to ID.

    Nice catch, IHB.

There are so many chanterelles now that I can't pick everything I find. Just too heavy. This last week I picked about 10lbs, and have been eating chanterelles every possible way. And to think people are dropping $25 a pound for these....

Where are they? They are the most obvious and easily found mushrooms. I find them from the screaming bright orange colors (like orange peels) that catch the corner of my eyes when riding. Usually they will be around silver oak, mid-way up an incline. But I've found some yesterday under pines on the flats. Wherever you find them, they will be there again in subsequent years. So keep a record.

Porcinis are up too, but rarer. I've found some last week.

Anyone interested in mushrooms in the Bay Area should get this book: "All That the Rain Promises and More: A Hip Pocket Guide to Western Mushrooms" by David Arora. It's $12 on Amazon. Perfect guide. I used to ride with it.

Shrooming makes winter so much more bearable. My wife loves it when I come home with $50 worth of mushrooms--and a great dinner.

P.S. Chanterelles are the easiest mushrooms to ID, and there aren't crazy poisonous ones that look like them. They are the perfect first mushroom to hunt. Here is reference here to ID and find them:

    Wow,
Made my mouth water. Hoping to find some chants in Marin on Thurs. Need to see if porcinis have been spotted at a favorite spot too.

Psssssst. Don't know if you know this but either substituting chantrelles for clams OR adding with clams to a nice thick clam chowder will present you with an epic soup. Don't forget to use a lot of bacon

    photo access To shrooms.

For some reason I cant view your photos. Do I need to ask for permission? If so, may I see? Love foraging as well. For a real challenge try and find truffles under doug fir. The Oregon white truffle in theory runs all the way down to the GG but I have onlynfound them up in Oregon.

Isn't there a poisonous mushroom that looks a lot like a chanterelle? I seem to recall something about this from reading The Omnivore's Dilemma.

Jack o'lantern looks vaguely similar in color but it has gills versus the more crepe or web like fluting of a chanterelle. I believe that the JOL also has a hollow stem?? And bruises and also glows a bit in a dark room. I also recall it will get you ill but not kill you. Lastly the shape is a bit different as well. More conical versus trumpet or vase like. Bottom line, if you are not trained or don't have an expert to ID in person just leave them where you found them.

I believe it is a porcini. I'm new and have a book, but scared to eat. This is the first edible shroom I found...I think?

Looks like a porcini but I wouldn't eat it until you get an expert. I've not been trained on porcini. Only candy caps, hedgehogs, and chanterelles.
