Road or mtb in San Jose?

hi - i'll be in San Jose on Feb 10/11. Can anyone recommend or recommend a good LBS i can talk to about either mtb in the area or good road routes?

Looking to do some sort of hard effort as i start to ramp for mtb racing season here in New England. And basically an awesome chance to possibly log some good base miles actually outside (28 inches of snow has made that hard - as well as the temp obviously).

    thanks!

ps will need to rent a bike, either from a shop or that site where you can rent stuff from regular ppl - can't remember the name of it.

    Mtb.

Our best forest is Soquel Demo Forest in Santa Cruz, Ca. All the photos here in this story are take on those trails.

Tread and Trailhead cycle both rent bike for $75 a day or so. They have respectable stuff.

Tread also rents road rigs. I highly recommend Mt Hamilton for the road ride. It's a solid work and views are worth the ride.

If you have a garmin 800, 805 or 1000, I can send you routes to follow. I think you can do the routes on a phone, but I have not tried.

As for base miles, you need to point your road bike towards Morgan Hill and Gilroy via McKean and Uvas rd. Most of the dirt here requires some work to get up, but it's so worth it. I'd say screw the base miles and just have a blast riding Demo
Lead by my Lefty............... right down the trail, no brakes.

Definitely don't rent a road bike.

Rent a MTB at TrailHead Cyclery right there at HWY 85/17 on your way to Demo Forest.

Call up Santa Cruz or Ibis (both over in Santa Cruz) and pick up a demo bike. Santa Cruz demo bikes are free and Ibis demos bike for ~$20, then head over to Demo or UCSC.

+1Trailhead/IBIS or SC Bikes, all on the way.
Here's how get miles and a prize.
Drive over to Aptos which is South of Santa Cruz on Hwy 1. and ride up Forrest of Niscene Marks fire road to top of Demo. You will know when you are at the top. Trail is to left. Can't go wrong on trail down, recommend Braille. Anyway, climb around back to top and scream down fire road back to Aptos. Maybe 30 miles?
Other point to remember, the parking lot at Demo draws the local crack heads looking for solo cars to bust a window out of. Don't leave anything of value, serious problem. I even had a pair of jeans stolen! It is remote up there and depend if it is a busy weekend or midweek day.
    Good luck.

Ibis demos - the $20 goes to MBOSC, not Ibis! I think Santa Cruz is doing it now, too. Or they were contemplating doing it...
Half the planet is deep into bloody tribal mayhem. We’re just riding bikes (and drinking beer) here.

That's a brutal ride. I'd just drive to demo so you can skip the 14 mile fire road climb through Nisene Marks... unless you're looking for some serious mileage. Directions in demo are easy, here's the map:
