OT: Phelps or Armstrong the greatest modern day athlete

If I had to choose between these two I'd be tough. Armstrong was considered my greatest modern day athlete until watching Phelps. He's dominating swimming like Tiger did at the Masters or Armstrong at the Tour.

    Thoughts?

I'd give it to Ron Jeremy.

    so funny! jenna jameson maybe?

but seriously how competitive is swimming, really? i mean, if you take the straight economic argument one would say that the worlds best athletes can be found playing or competing in the world's best paying sports. phelps, well, if he wins all 8 gold medals this olympics he gets a bonus from speedo of.............$1 million. Kobe Bryant, oh he made $35 million last year. so, while Phelps may be the most dominating athlete in his sport, i wouldn't go so far as to say he is "the greatest athlete" by any means. same goes for armstrong...well, maybe not.

Your argument is too USA-centric. Basketball? The rest of the world watches soccer.

Besides, what does earning potential have to do with performance on the field? When trying to determine who is the best athlete, is is best not to resort to economic criteria.

To determine the best overall athlete, you need to look at absolute performance over a range of criteria. Gold medals don't hurt either.

ok, Beckham $37.4 million a year. i'll concede that using simple economics as a way to determine athletic greatness has its faults, but it has the least potential for value arguments about which skills are the best metrics for determining athletic greatness, the rich western masses have decided that. and with their decision, the majority of athletes have followed- either out of their own choice or because the culture and infrastructure is there to support it. what does that mean? more athletes and greater competition means the bar is raised and the best athletes in popular sports are the best athletes.

but you know, all of this, is just about perception of what skills have value. i mean, golf? putting a tiny ball into a tiny hole on green grass in the middle of the desert is valuable? have you ever seen some of those indigenous brazilian rainforest hunters track and kill their game through the forest with blowguns- shooting 100 yards through dense foilage to hit targets the size of the holes in a golf course, barefooted? those are some amazing athletes.

    Dave Weins

My vote is for 43 year old Dave Weins...

He can even hike-a-bike faster than marathoner Lance Armstrong.

maybe the greatest modern day drug addict ...

And why does it matter how much an athlete makes a year for how great he/she is? If it comes to that Michael Schumacher should be pretty much on top of the list - he made >60 million EUR each year.

Anyway, I don't like personal cult

Phelps or Armstrong? That's easy! Lock them in the Thunderdome: Two men enter, one man leaves...

well....what defines "greatest athlete"?? is it endurance?..strength?...consistency?....multiple sports?.....

if so, i'd have to go with Mark Allen....won Kona Ironman 6 times.......i'd like to see Phelps or Armstrong even come close to any one of his finishes...
