    Nino/Sea Otter

Not sure if this is the best forum to post but does anyone know if Nino will be racing at Sea Otter this year?

I'd be willing to bet he is, we usually do see the current world champ, as long as there are no conflicting World Cup races on the schedule. I'd be more interested to see Gwin race in the dual slalom, anyone in contact with him?

Sea Otter XCO has been downgraded by UCI to a C2 race this year. It was formerly an HC race, which was the main reason for the international competition to come out (HC races offer the most points of any race except World Cups, National/Continental Champs, and World Champs). This is a big disappointment. I don't know the reason but would guess the sponsors were not willing or able to do what is necessary to satisfy the UCI. Perhaps someone who knows can explain.

The Fontana and Bonelli races in LA earlier in April are HC races so should have stiffer competition. If Nino comes to the US it would be for one or both of those races, most likely, and we will be lucky if he sticks around for Sea Otter. But he would have no reason to do so as there is an HC race in Austria the same weekend.

Not sure, but the downgrade maybe temporary. They have been removing/clearing old munitions at Ft Ord which has shutdown/destroyed many trails the race used to run on. They are using big masticators that are clearing everything except for the well established trees.

Fortunately, they will be reopening the affected areas and looks like the old trails and some new ones will be available. Heart breaking to see it first hand, but in the long run nature will restore it quickly.

Said hi & spoke with Aaron at Sea Otter last year, cool guy to chat with. This year however it looks as if he will be in Croatia for the opening round of the UCI Downhill.
April 21-22: (DHI) - Lošinj, Croatia

The XCO riders don't have anything scheduled that weekend, so maybe we'll get a Nino sighting.
