There was a huge demand for another printing, so, while convalescing from hernia surgery in December I got to work on a completely revised colored map 2nd edition guidebook. The first guide book pales in comparison as I put in over 200+ (whose counting anyway) carpal tunnel induced hours to reillustrated all the maps in 300 DPI resolution. Then employed my son, a professional graphic designer, to do the lay-out. We sent it off to an off-set printer in Wisconsin last week with proof in hand this last Tuesday. Books will be available soon in Mendocino stores such as Catch-A-Canoe, Gallery Books and the Outdoor Store (FTB) to name a few for $17.00 plus tax. The 2nd editon printing will be limited so, get one while they last. I sold out the first edition printing in 10 days.

I am taking advanced orders for the newest guidebook for $17.00 plus $3.00 postage to be mailed as soon as they arrive.
Had to amend my name as new bank won't cash checks with nicknames due to Patriot Act. I feel much safe now. Please send check to:

The 2nd edition guidebooks have finally arrived!
New Guidebook for Mendocino Coast Cometh!-poster-child-nick4-flat.jpg

Feels like childbirth and welcoming a new member of the family. All that work, pushing and breathing and finally popping out my creation.

To those who have pre-ordered the guidebooks, I will be putting them in the mail this weekend. Thank you for all your support, enthusiasm and patience to be on the cutting edge of Mendocino Coastal riding. We are working hard to keep our trails open to your liking as well as our own. Even reconditioning older ones that now showcase our region's 100's of miles of fantastic riding.

Too many riding communities keep secret their treasures, we would like to think sharing makes a more welcoming MTB community. Life is too short to squander the fun. Come join us here to celebrate the goodness!
Riding the Mendocino coast is about putting a new spin on hospitality...

If you are referring to the Paradise Royale area, it is closed due to a manhunt for a suspected killer who is from the Shantytown area near Shasta. He supposedly has hidden out in the King range national recreation area. This is about 3 hours north of us. We are not under any police activity here, Thank God!

Trails are all open and in perfect shape. Bring your group up here for a ton of fine coastal style riding. We have many more miles of fine climbing, vertical smile ridden descents and the best pizza east of the Hudson river than the Paradise Royale destination anyway.

New Guidebook for Mendocino Coast Cometh!

Any special discounts for those that bought the first version but want the revised version? Also, wondering if this will/is a digital book as well?

I am very appreciative of your purchase of my first book. The 2nd edition is a whole nother book all together with color maps and design layout. My costs were much higher for this version. I'm still far off from breaking even at this point. I'd love to help but at the moment I can not offer any discounts.

I have no plans to do it digital yet. May do so in the future. I'd be happy to send you some GPX tracks as a good will gesture.
Let me know and I will email them to you.

Got my book in the mail, can't wait to ride some of these trails. I have wanted to ride JSDF for a while, now I will know where I am going!

And, I have to confirm that Piaci's is awesome. Really good pizza and a solid beer selection. I've been in there a few times after spearfishing and it is the best pizza north of Home Run Pizza here in Santa Rosa.

New Guidebook for Mendocino Coast Cometh!

Got my book in the mail yesterday too. Nice work Roo, it looks great. I think we need a JSF sticky, given the multitude of threads on mtbr, plus that would provide a place for ride reports and a place to find the GPS tracks from the rides.

Next version suggestion: add in really long routes (like 50-100mi) for bike packing adventurers or those who are just a little sick in the head...

How do I do a sticky?

Also, currently working on two epic 50 and 100 milers for the next edition.

New Guidebook for Mendocino Coast Cometh!

Got your guidebook yesterday all the way out here in Lexington, Kentucky. Is that the farthest you sent the book so far?

Which of the rides has the hole in the tree? Jesse took me there last year, and the whole ride was awesome.

    Larry,

Glad you got your copy. They are going faster than I was anticipating. Sold several on the trail this weekend. Almost out of books in the box in my car. Sold about 160 so far.

You are the farthest away! Come back anytime to ride. Jesse is a partner now in the Mendocino Bike Sprite guide service which I guide for as well. I think Bike guides need a name a little more sophisticated like Geographical Location Engineers (GLE).

Ride Thru Tree trail is in danger of being lost this summer due to a timber harvest in that area. The trail has been flagged by Cal-Fire to restore after operations, but I have my doubts they will as supported by the evidence of not doing so on other trails lost over the years.

Big River Big Ride - 100KM

OK... Here you go for starters. This track is for a 65.4 mile ride with 11,460' of elevation gain. Not sure I could survive it. Nor do I wish to be that sick in the head to do so.
This ride is a combination of three rides starting from Big River near Hwy 1 to the Scales to Rd 408 out to HWY 20 and then down into Camp 1 area to Bob Woods. This particular area can be found as well in the book as the Camp 1 Ultimate Loop. Adding the extra 6.07 miles going up Rd 360 and Wagon Wheel would bring this ride to 71+ miles. One would then come back over Rd 408 to the top of Forest History trail to Manly up Eagles Roost down Big Tree and then the Big River Haul road back to parking area. Where is Wherewolf for this epic? Calling Wherewolf...

I'm not sure the GPX file got attach properly. Let me know.

I really hope that they keep to their word on restoration. It would be sad to lose that trail as it has been one of my favorites over the last few years....that is as long as we are pointing down, not climbing.

Is this the shorter version of Mendocino 100 race route?

    Mendocino 100 Race

It is not. I haven't seen Murphy's final 100 mile map. He and Jesse worked out something with Campbell lands for the additional mileage.

I created the Big River Big Ride route for anyone who is brave enough or is need of eating two Piaci pizzas for the hard work of doing it.

I'm currently mapping a 100 miler for the next guidebook 3rd edition - the Whole 9 Yards! I'm finding it not easy to do considering everything would be in the JDSF and Big River and Russian Gulch State parks. I'm toying with different ideas at the moment. I'll be talking with Jesse and a few others for ideas.

Just an additional note to this thread:

Ride Thru Tree in the Caspar Scales area of the JDSF will become part of a big logging operation this summer. If this is one of your favorite rides as it is mine, I would highly recommend coming here to give it a blessing ride for future resurrection. The logging operation will impact rides as far east as North and South Weir trails.

Being a demonstration forest, we must accept the fact our trails may be impacted from timber harvests. Ride Thru has been flagged by Cal-Fire to alert the loggers to the existence of this trail and hopefully restore it for our future riding enjoyment. We can only hope...

coming out this weekend. I have to dig up my go-pro so I can shoot some video of riding through the tree for posterity sakes at least.

Sounds like the Sprites will have their hands full with the great planned weekend for the shindig you got going on.

    The word. It is out!
