Can they be added once my membership expires in March? If so I would love to get a few extra months in there! I bought a year membership last March.

Reading all this crap about you sons of guns out riding is driving me crazy! My work week has really gotten in the way of things. So tempting to call in sick and ride but I know exactly what will happen. I will be riding and run into my commander and he say, "I thought you were sick today?" Then I stutter and try to think of something fast and completely fail! My poor little GPS is sitting on the kitchen counter just staring at me when I get home at night. It looks so sad. I am going to try and make up for some of this on friday. Might go to a few places that day. Maybe St JOes in morning, then to fremont older and maybe wrap it up at Alum Rock park. i am determined to try for some PR's or KOM times at Fremont older.

The trick is not to call in sick but to call in "sorry". Lets do this together: "Uh, ya, this is (your name here). I'm sorry I'm not going to be coming in today. I'll be in tomorrow". See, no lie at all! Nothing to cover for. And you are truly sorry you are not there, right?

Sparky and codepoet- I like where your heads are at! All sounds good in theory anyway. Maybe if I get too stressed I will take a day and climb 10k feet.

I ride pretty much every morning in Los Gatos, road and MTN, usually rolling around 6AM.
That 1hr of riding makes a big difference in my long day at work... and sleep is overrated anyway.

Marco I hear ya on that. I have been riding with a group and we have been out at 6am on St Joes this winter. I have never been so cold on a ride before. We also been riding at Fremont older on sunday mornings at the same time. I can't remember being so happy to start climbing just to warm up. Then the descents come and I cringe because of the windchill factor. The wife had this past week for vacation and I volunteered to take the daughter to school. Your right about sleep, sometimes it just gets in the way!

Looks like Strava will eventually regulate the club size for the challenge since there currently is no restriction.

    http://support.strava.com/discussion...and-club-sizes

My guess is that only the top X number of riders in the club will have their elevation count towards the total. A competition within the competition.

I'll take 'em! 4000 foot climb of Mt Diablo in the wind, rain and snow. Road to the top and the parking lot were closed since they were covered in snow and drifting hail. Lost traction just short of the top in ICE! I always wanted to do that but I'm pretty sure I won't do it again.

Ya, I know "pics or it didn't happen!" I shot a couple with the cell phone but I can't get them to show up here. I need "mtbr images for dummies" or something. Dang!

You and Leopold took one for the team today. It's really crappy out there. I had planned to go out and do a big ride after work, but I'm taking a "rest day."

It was cold, miserable, and windy (one gust almost blew me off my bike speeding down Bernal hill ), but I did it anyway. I was wet like a drowned rat when I got home. Had to hose myself down with the garden hose, the hose water felt warm.

I think the group that is in second place must be feeling us on the back of their necks as they sure did throw down some climbing yesterday.

I imagine they will limit the size of the groups eventually too...but until quantity certainly has a quality of its own I posted something in the Socal forum few days ago but pretty much nobody seemed that interested.

Maybe if you posted something Francois?

Or maybe the dumbass award! That isn't something I would recommend, or repeat anytime soon. I was soaked to the bone and the last hour or two were pretty miserable, but by the time I got home I could feel most of my toes again!

I am hoping to do the same ride again tomorrow… no, wait, it’s already Friday! WTF am I still doing awake??? According to the hourly weather report at Accuweather.com, it’s going to be pissing down metric buttloads of rain until Saturday… another drenched ride. But, all in the name of adding a mere 1,600+ feet of climbing in the name of the team. If it keeps raining like this and doesn’t let up, I’ve already committed—told my wife that I WILL be doing this same ride EVERY DAY until the last day of the month—28th of February!

Hose ’er down, use the air compressor to get the water off, re-lube the key areas, take that fucker out the next day and RIDE IT HARD!!!

Bah!!! 3/4 of a pot of coffee later it dawned on me that the rain was only getting heavier. I pussed out.

I'm determined to make up some elevation tomorrow for my laziness this week. Will be doing some sort of 40 mile flavored ride in Los Gatos tomorrow with 6,500 - 7000 feet of climbing. Anyone is welcome to join, but it will be a moderate pace with a couple bailout options.

Up Montevina > down El Sereno > up Kennedy > down to Lexington > up and down Soda Springs and maybe a bonus lap at St. Joes for the extra footies.

Hmm… if it’s early enough I might be able to wing it. On rides like that I generally like to head out a bit after 8:00-8:30AM.

I'm glad a teammate had an old garmin 305 to sell me. Strava is pretty fun. So far only uploaded two Auburn rides. Bike thieves and rain are hampering my numbers!

I'd love the free 3mo thing if that's still available?

Yes. Hopefully the ranger gets there before 8 to unlock the gate. If not we can swing around to another spot to park. I am going to keep some supplies in the car in case I need to restock between Kennedy and Soda Springs. Should I look out for you?

Well, since I will be riding my bike over there, I will need to ride up and over St. Joseph’s to get to the parking lot. I will be entering where that dead end street is—Jones Road, yeah, that’s the street. It’s possible to make it up and over to the parking lot you speak of in 30 minutes though, have to be spinning the cranks like a mofo though.

You can also take the creek trail up to the reservoir.. much faster, but slightly less cool. I'm in no rush, so I'll see you out there.

True, forgot about the sissy option… which I will probably end up taking part in. Looking forward to riding with you!

(a while later, I flashed on something)
Oh crap, last time I rode over there, the sissy path was closed. Hmm, I think I should just go up and over from Jones Road.

It does count for more because it was cold and raining. You decide how much.

You may have been the only rider today. Bigger bonus for that one I think.

I rode one lap at St Joes today and all I can say is that it was miserable!! Didn't think it would be so cold and wet. I was chilled to the bone and freezing on the way down. The climb sucked and there was no way I was going to set any PRs today. I only managed 900 feet and then decided to bail out. I saw 2-3 other mtbr's at about 9am. It was really coming down on that trail. I called it sloppy joes because I had dirt in my mouth and other areas I will not mention. It was 41 degrees and it felt like 32! I will contribute more next week or sunday. I might even put it a few MTB night rides as well. I covered my 500 with saran wrap and hope it didn't effect the elevation too much. I just didn't want to see my GPS get knocked out from water damage.

No contribution this week, but I will get it going next week rain or shine. Should get a nice snow ride in tomorrow.

I find it hard to believe that we cannot amass more people from MTBR to win this thing. How many members on MTBR are there? I would think that we would so dominate it that they would have to change the rules to let other people have a chance.

As it stands now the group ahead of us is pretty hardcore and had 8 people out riding today. Most of those are in Norcal too. And some serious footies. Damn roadies

I will try to get some more codes tomorrow from my source for the 3 free months. Sorry I could not do it today but I had to work. Will post when I have some so you can PM me.

In the meantime we need to recruit some people from some southern nice areas to join up as well!

Oh crap, last time I rode over there, the sissy path was closed. Hmm, I think I should just go up and over from Jones Road.
It will take you less than 10 min to get from the car up and over jones to the lot. I"ll ride with you guys tomorrow.
    Hmmm what bike to ride.

I'd rather stay in a close third instead of have 2x or more the number of riders and be in first where no ones contribution really makes a difference. Wait until ThirstyBear Starts racing, right now the team is out building their base for race season.

    Sun tomorrow!

Haven't ridden all week and have been itching to get in some miles! Doing a Kennedy Rd, Hicks, Mt. Umhumum Rd ride tomorrow (to the no trespassing signs at ~3000 ft.) Leaving from the Los Gatos Unlimited Parking lot between University and N. Santa Cruz Ave. Rolling about 8:30 if anyone wants to join. Should still be some snow up there!

Amazing job those that road today and climbed. Every time I looked at the outside temp at ~300 feet it said 43 degrees and pissing rain.

Did Round 2 of the Grasshopper Adventure Series in West Sonoma County - cold, but no rain! And just under 70 miles / 7000 feet to add to my total

Was a nice, albeit FREEZING cold and snowy day up St. Joes - Montevina - Kennedy Trail - Dogmeat, with rensho, urban turban, and… sorry, forgot the other three blokes’ names—I indicated I suck at remembering peoples’ names (let alone their MTBR.com forum handles). From there, rensho and I attacked another 3,000+ feet of altitude gain up to the top of Soda Springs Road… he and I amassed more than 8,000 feet of climbing each! I must admit that I took the wrong bike on such an intensive climb endeavour, but round-trip to/from my house I still managed to pull in more than 50 miles. Urban turban took some photos, mind sharing them? Rensho and I took some shots of the deep-ass snowfall at the top of Soda Springs with my crappy cellphone, thanks Rensho for being so patient while I lugged my tired butt up there with my sub-50 pound beast of a bike. I will now share some of the pictures:

Thought about that today and wondered if you had snow on the course. Wasn't up for a 2 hour drive for a questionable ride. I rode the Old Caz ride last month and had about as much fun as is possible to have on a bike. Definitely in for Super Sweetwater, and maybe a few more

Wow you guys went beyond the call of duty today! Impressive climbing.

Wish we had some climbs to match the ones you have...Bout the longest climb in SLO is 3k feet and then you have to turn around

It was cold out there this morning. I got snowed on 2x... Kennedy and Montevina. Good riding with you guys. Put up ~4400 feet of climbing before my thumbs froze up completely. Hoping to get out again this weekend.

It was definitely a challenging ride. I wasn't exactly prepared for all of the snow we encountered. By the time we finished descending from Kennedy I was getting pretty worried about my left foot, which I had lost feeling in for about an hour. I took my sock off to see that things were looking very purple.. a little too purple for me to feel comfortable with. So I called it a day.

Here is a picture of the group at the top of El Sereno. I had a great time riding with you guys. From left to right: Leopold Porkstacker, JorgeTheMagician, rensho, and A.S.K.

I've been uploading my max 5 free rides a month but I think this may make it fun enough to pull the trigger on an annual membership. Especially if one of the codes in this thread works.

Joined the club and KOM group and added 19K or so footies.. have a bunch more I can upload if I pay up.

Don't. You're already #1 of the mtbr group using only the 5 free rides/month:
    http://app.strava.com/komchallenge/c...sults/february

If you pay up and upload all your rides, nobody will have a chance to get even close .
(fwiw, I'm also on the el cheapo 5 uploads/month for the time being)

    Ahh Wwwaaaahhhhhhhhhh............

I lost the whole first ride today and 2000 footies in a file corruption thingy! I'm really hoping Strava can help fix it. That would move me to second spot for February. (for a moment or two)

Just couldn't do the whole couch thing so I went for a ride. Got 3000 more feet in an effort to get to the summit of Mt Diablo this afternoon. It was kinda fun to watch what happens when everyone goes to the snow. The road was jammed with cars, but the simple bicycle easily cut through all the stopped traffic and didn't even need a parking place. Only by the time I got there the road was closed at Juniper so footies got maxed early. Oh well, there's always tomorrow.

As for more 3 month free codes I am trying. My "contact" is out of town though he did tell me he should be able to get more.

as soon as I have them I will post that I do so you can PM for them. And for those who did PM and are waiting I will send to you directly first.

In the meantime I am trying to find a friggin climb that is anything like what you guys have been riding. Would have to do lap after lap of same thing to get close!

OK better late than never. I joined the mtbr.com team and added my three rides from this week, That should put us in second place. I had already deleted the SuperBowl Sunday ride up Mt Hamilton from the Garmin Edge500, but is still on my Garmin Connect. Can I upload rides from Garmin Connect to Strava as well?

I see how addicting this Strava is. I already paid to upgrade to the unlimited plan. I already got a few top 10 finishes on some segments. Is it possible to see the results on Strava by age groups? I want to see how I compare to other 50+ men.

You can export the ride from Garmin Connect and then simply browse to it in Strava and upload it.

Well, the freezing temperatures and added difficulty of trudging through the snow and slop sure made it more challenging!

Sadly, the Peloton is sure to catch and swallow this gung-ho rider. Will get in a final ride today but conference in Palm Springs all this week with very cold rain later in the week spells my doom. Go get em' team MT(and a touch of road...not from me)BRrrr.

(PS. Strava still hasn't fixed my 45k ft that I posted in Jan but isn't showing up for our team)

With all those steep, loose ascents, climbing in SLO is no joke! That said, I've had a few pretty good climbing (and and even better descending) days down there:

With 11,000+ footies so far this weekend (6,800 at the Grasshopper and 4,300 yesterday), I figured I'd improve on my 5th place ranking. But with everyone else stepping up their game and a strong newcomer at the front, I'm right where I started!

It's almost like trying to stay with a strong peloton in road bike racing. My legs are SCREAMING for mercy - but if I ease up at all, I'm going to get dropped! And no matter what I do, I still feel like a big wimp compared to Porkstacker and that 8000 foot day in the snow with that 50 lb bike...

I can't think of a more fun way to prep for the Boggs 8 hour

You’re not a wimp, just not insane/masochistic like me.

ZenTurtle has been logging a lot of rides and many elevation feet of climbing on Strava, but has not joined the mtbr.team yet. Is he on Team Wrong Way?

Garmin sayd if this last fix doesn't work, I need to send it back for which I need to wait 14 days to get back. Argh part 2.

Have fun out there all...my Feb is all but done.

We are inching closer to taking the win for this month. The forecast this week looks to be cold but rideable weather in the Bay Area, and I have plans to make this last week count.

We got a couple mentions in the blog/twitter coverage:

OK team, here's the deal. All you all have to do ride every opportunity you get. Oh, and make opportunities. .

Sure, but don't forget to climb. It's about feet not miles! Enjoy!

I have plans to attempt 10,000+ feet more before the end of this week… today and tomorrow no school for my kids so that sort of cuts into my altitude gaining plans. Going to have to stack a few days in a row, perhaps do Kennedy to St. Joe’s and some multiple circle loops up/down Shannon Road and Kennedy Road… or something.

If they are comparing mountain and road feet climbed mtn feet should be more than road. So, for example, mountain feet should be times 1.5 or at least 1.3. Just can't compare to road...

If the weather forecast holds, next weekend could be a challenge to get much climbing in. No problem riding, but when there is snow ag 1,500', and roads are closed, its just hard to climb.

Totally disagree with some of the posters on road climbing vs. dirt. I can get to the Diablo summit on fire road in about half the time it takes me on the road. Its just shorter. Technical single track is a different story, but dirt alone doesn't make it more difficult.

Holy smokes...where'd this Mr. Crash come from!?

My work pays for my Blackberry...not buying into a second phone. Biggest issue is I have to go to a conference for 4 days and no bikes are joining. I might do an early morning ride as the 405 does last 2 hours...gotta get 40k+ for the month at least, eh? Bought an Egde 500 today just for kicks (arrives in three days). March will be strong!

    Charge on team!
