MENDO COAST- EZOut Gets NEW BRIDGE!

MENDO COAST- EZOut Gets NEW BRIDGE!-bridge-.jpg

EZOut (Caspar Crossing South) got a NEW BRIDGE yesterday! For those who got white knuckled on the old rotting bridge, fear not; as we removed it and replaced it with a 1500 lbs(?) old growth redwood buckskin slab. The new bridge is approximately 3.5'+ wide. Also see, new trail work to hillside making the approach much more reasonable. I got a chance to try it out in this morning's drizzle. Be cautious: as centerline is very damp and a bit slippery.

The large tree slab was dragged approximately 450' from lower elevations while dodging large standing trees as we winched it up through a dense slash area with our new Honda gas powered winch. Many folks ran log rollers up the hill in front of the slowly moving slab. A very exhilarating hour of roller running while others muscled the slab with large wooden pry bars. Here is Nick's (aka:Head Steam Donkey) report:

    Hey Everyone,

It was a mighty fine day out in the woods today working on Caspar Crossing South, aka EZOut.

With a crew of 12 we managed to move a big old buckskin about 450 feet up the trail to replace the existing bridge that was located just above the reroute we’ve been working on. We utilized our new portable winch (donated by: Lifetime One Track Mind - LOTM) to pull the heavy load uphill, but the effort still required plenty of good old fashion muscle.

In addition to installing the new bridge, we managed a little dirt work just above the bridge, changing the approach just a bit, and then work two corners of the reroute which finished out the turns. The work just above the bridge will mostly be a little soft with the rains we’ll see tomorrow. Take some care there.

Transport of this equipment (winch) in and out of the trail was made easier by the Power Donkey, the eBike donated to the club by Specialized and enabled by Colin Belisle. While eBikes are forbidden in JDSF, the Club is granted special permission to utilize the eBike for trail maintenance only.

Awesome! Strong work. I remember the old bridge well. Looking forward to riding EZOut later this summer.

    Thanks Roo and Co!
