This event seemed to spring up out of nowhere for me, but brings back the best memories of NORBA racing back in the day. Anyone planning on racing? The Enduro courses look great and definitely favor the DH set.
In 1985 the Kamikaze was the only NORBA downhill race that took place, because the idea terrified promoters. A visionary named Don Douglass talked Mammoth into letting him put on the downhill event, and I assisted in the timing. It was enormously popular.
The next year Mammoth told Mr. Douglass, thanks, but we'll take it from here. If not for Don Douglass' vision, there might not be a downhill sport.
It's all in my book, if Velo Press ever publishes it.
My silver medal from the 1986 Mammoth Mtn. Kamikaze hangs in my bedroom. Tied for 1st in the trials, top ten in the downhill and top ten in the CX. Sport class. Yes, I am that old, and still riding, with the occasional Cat 2 race.
A few of us rec'd honorary speeding tix(1989-90) for cracking the 50 mph barrier through the radar zone.(pre suspension days folks)
Don Myrah rec'd an honorary Parking tix from his team mates for being such a slug for the DH.
Always think of Mammoth as one of those places where the Gladiators(and Gladiatresses) fought their greatest battles.
How about e-publishing your book? I'll buy a copy.
