    Making the Pliny Pilgrimage

I'm heading up to Santa Rosa tomorrow with a couple other riders from the South Bay. Plan is to ride Annadel and drink some Pliny the Younger. First time for both!

The beer part I think I have figured out. Any tips or suggestions for riding Annadel? We're pretty solid riders on AM rigs. Hoping to get a good 2-3 hour ride in.

You need a local guide!! Someone step up. PACS will buy you a beer.

I've been there 8x and have no idea where I'm going.

    Have fun

Lot's of route suggestions if you do a search. Just off the top of my head I'd say something that involves going down Lawndale and down the Burmas or Rough Go.

Heres a link to a pdf map of Annadel
    http://www.parks.ca.gov/pages/480/fi...ochure2012.pdf

This is a pretty standard route for annadel, 20+ miles. You can do it in 3 hours if you keep moving.

Channel drive parking lot to channel trail> Warren Richardson> Two quarry> left on Marsh> Lawndale> right Lawndale paved road> Right Shultz paved road> Shultz trail> Ridge trail> right Marsh> left S. burma> right Warren richardson> left N burma> left Live oak> right rough go> right orchard> right on cobblestone back to channel drive parking lot. You can cut a couple miles off that route by staying on north burma to channel dr parking.

But of course, free beer to anyone who wants to show us around. Also willing to reciprocate down here (Demo and Santa Cruz area).

Fuenstock, thanks for the map and the recommendation - looks good.

Fuenstock's route will show most of the good stuff that Annadel has to offer. Just make sure you eat your wheaties first. That ride is a great workout with all of the fun downhills included.

Ooof. I drove by Saturday afternoon around 2pm and the line was about that long: all the way down 4th to the corner and halfway down D Street.
    Next year for me.

Saturday is not a good indicator. It is just a non-starter. Next year, the line will be twice as long.

If you want no line, just show up on a week day at 11 am.

This should be true, but I arrived at 10:45 am yesterday (Monday) and found the line about the same as that video (almost to the corner). Second year in a row that I got burned. I'm done with Younger pilgrimage. Tried it three years ago and, although it's very good, I'm not waiting in line more than 15 minutes for any beer. Too much hype now. At least there's always annadel to make the trip worth it.

    ^^^ this

It's fun if you want to make an adventure out of it. Ride, hang out with the guys, etc., but no doubt, this beer is over-hyped.

I should have said that second part as well because it's very true. I don't want to make it sound like it's not worth going up there for. I hear it's a great beer.

Third street ale works is a good alternative, or you could eat at Lagunitas in Petaluma.

Pliny the Younger is so direly overrated, as are all these other fancy beers. I would just prefer a Keystone Ice.

In regards to the Pliny and waiting in line, don't forget it is SF Beer week and many locations have it on tap for a specific time and place! All throughout the Bay area! Go online and Google SF Beer week. Click on the schedule and there you go!! Ride, Drink, Ride, Drink, Repeat!!!

This is a decent suggestion but it is pretty much a non-starter. With hundreds/thousands of people looking at the schedule looking to share one keg, it is often the case that there is a long line and then they run out. That was last year. This year is worse.

Toronado has a new keg every day this week I believe.

Maybe the difference is that they actually announced it this year, and they post up that they tap everyday at 11:30 a.m. until it runs out. This year, I hear there has actually been a line everyday Toronado, and they have been running out pretty fast. Last year, it was just assumed that they had the Younger. People in the know would just show up, and order a Younger without a problem. Last year, I just strolled in on Lagunitas Day during beer week, and did a side by side tasting of SF Fusion vs. Younger.

But it is Beer Week Hump Day today, and the weak will fade. Only the hardy livered ones will forge on. Perhaps these are the weekdays to go and try to hunt down the Younger. When the weekend comes around, it will get nuts again, because people will want to get it before it's gone.

Fuenstock, the route was awesome. Totally impressed with Annadel!

Started riding by 8am, made it to RRB by 11:30 - line was already down to the end of the street. Didn't even slow down...just drove straight to 3rd street alehouse.

Maybe next year Pliny the Younger...

Thanks to all for the tips.

End of the street? That's at least a two hour line.

Lagunitas Tap room is the other go to place. Crap food but great beers on tap.

It was available in Palo Alto today. Probably gone by now though. It will make a SJ appearance over the weekend as well.

The pliney craze is over for this year. Here are some other alternatives.

There is a little bar on 4th street towards the mall call the "sweetspot" They have about 6-8 Lagunitas tap handles going. Also, the restaurant across the street, "Flavor" has Moonlight on tap.

Downtown Santa Rosa has got quite the pub crawl.

you should've gone on Superbowl Sunday. that's when we went. I waited in line before they opened with my nephew who was visiting, soon as doors opened we walked right in, wifey waited for about 45 minutes a little later and by the time the game started, saw another friend who walked right in, no line!

mid-week, mid-day after the lunch rush is usually a good time. at least in the past that's when I've been able to walk in. also knowing a couple of alternatives is good to know. the brewery is not the only place in SoCo that will carry it.

other good beer/food alternatives nearby would be the Sweetspot, Toad in the Hole Pub, or even Sprengher's Tap Room. 3rd Street Aleworks is 'Ok' IMO. there beer is 'drinkable' but also fairly mild compared to RR, Lagunitas or Bear Republic but they do have the largest menu of food out of any of these places.

Well, I made the effort, with my wife and some friends, to get over to Harry's Hofbrau to see if we could get a taste of PtY, but they had sold out in 20 minutes so we were stuck with a pitcher of Pliny the Elder and pints of Drake's Hoppocalypse white label. That's the best consolation prize I have ever had.

Me too. They must have been half-kegs? PTY and Black Label were sold out quick. Even if they were half kegs that's $1000 per keg retail at $1/oz. The white label was a very nice consolation prize, I agree.

I got my sip of Pliny the Younger. Really good, but still not worth the crazy lines. Good thing we had an awesome beer week with tons of incredible "100 point" beers to be had all over the Bay Area.

    Here's my little pictorial re-cap:
    Pliny The Younger released today!
