THANKS! It's just a regular iPhone 4. Admittedly, I use a couple of apps to enhance the photos and I also have a detachable wide angle and macro lens for it - but I am, by no means, using a "regular" camera.

This are a few of my favorite iPhone pics from the trail that I've taken. I've learned that you basically have to lay on the ground to get good angles, find creative ways to prop up your bike, and use the sun, clouds and lens flairs to your advantage.

Instagram gives me a "bar" to live up to. Although there are a lot of "cheaters" on there, I can appreciate the people who honestly use their phones as photography tools. I am looking forward to the iPhone 5, simply because the camera will be an upgrade.

I love that last shot, great composition and right place at the right time. You make it look so easy! I have been trying so hard to get out of documenting things and being more creative but my frigging engineering mind gets in the way.

What lenses are you using on the Iphone? I don't want to carry my DSLR and my phone is always on me when I ride. I need to use it more.

I just got my iPhone 4 wet and it didn't work so I bought 4s and now 4 works fine. I want to learn how to do pics like that.
Btw that last one is "pic of the year" to me.

    Hey Ken,

Do a search on FeeBay "iPhone lens" and a ton of options come up. Of course, they are all China specials, but you can get a wide angle for less than $2, shipped.

You really have to get low (I sometimes lay on the ground) or what they call "shooting from the hip". Not being afraid of reflections, sunlight, strange shadows, etc. Use the "rule of thirds" when you shoot and adjust the focus for different depths of field. You can do this by tapping on where you want to focus, and it will change the picture dramatically.

A lot of use of basic design elements, like patterns and leading objects i.e. a fence line or telephone poles/wires fading off into perspective to lead the eye to your subject are also neat little tricks to use. Sometimes, creative cropping works - for example I completely cut off IAmHolland's head in the black and white pic above to create a sense of being candid. When I position things directly in the middle of the shot, I am going for iconography, as opposed to candid. This is all just basic design 101 stuff I learned as an 18 yr. old freshman in art school nearly 20 years ago .

I find the worst time to take pics is in direct sunlight, middle of the day. Bright cloudy days are awesome. I took this one on a bright, sunny day and lucked out - but I did use a leading design element, perspective and the sun to build a decent shot.

I always have to adjust my focus because the pic gets too big. And this new 4S camera is even more difficult. If its over 5000kb rarely uploads so focus helps reduce the size.

Since Tapatalk doesn't work, here are the pics from today at the Gap. I was amazed at how foggy and wet it was, because when I went last October it was sunny and dry dry dry!

^^ the completely legal beach/shoreline trail from Beeks to Sterling Pointe. Very scenic, and riding pretty well right now, considering it's fairly sandy and pretty bumpy from the primary user (horsies). Not for everyone, but great for those with a sense of adventure.
