A tire needs to supple and compliant and conform to the rocks to have good rolling resistance on rough surfaces.

I used to ride with 60 psi to go fast. Now I ride.... 22 psi most of the time (tubeless). More control and more traction too.

As far as traction is concerned, yes that's an issue on this climb too. Less is more.

Thanks for the advice. I gave 45 psi a try on the Virl O Norton ("Mockingbird Wall") trail in Quicksilver yesterday and found that I spent so much effort fighting to either keep traction on the rear wheel or keep my front tire down that it slowed me down quite a bit. I'l stick with 30 on Saturday

Planning to make it, still cant decide plastic vs. metal.

BTW, you may get more rsponses if you will post on the last page
Speaking of which, would be cool to have option to jump to the last page right from the main forum page.

Ahh, I never knew that since I'm using linear mode viewing. The latest post is always the last post.

    I'll repost and fix.

I'll skip the ride up the hill, with lot of sadness (yeah right), but Marco will be doing it for the family good name (go daddy go)!
The girls and I will be waiting for the post ride party (yayyy!).
How about Tiramisu' (in english is 'pick me up' and I think is appropriate for the ride you will be doing!) ...? or some other dessert
Is it the same park as last year? it was a very nice place!

    Hey all,
I'm new here on the board, but I live close to the trailhead and I've ridden the trail the last two weekends, so why not make it three in a row. See you in the morning.
I'm no ringer by the way, I'll be in the slow group.

8:15 at the trailhead - since you're getting there early, you'll get one of the limited parking spots...

Need some timing help for Kennedy, Sat Sept. 6

I'd suggest parking near this spot - there's parking along the side of Kennedy or any of the side streets.

    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=e...=UTF8&t=h&z=17

Then its a 15-20 minute ride up Kennedy to the trailhead (10 if you're fast and pushing it). That will make a good warm-up before the actual hillclimb.

Please plan on getting there ~10 minutes before your wave. We're going to try and start them at these times on the nose - any stragglers will just have to wait...
9:00 - "slower" riders 45-60+ minute expected climb times
9:15 - "standard" riders - 30-45 minutes expected climb times
9:30 - "King" riders: 30 minute or lower ride times

If you're not a "King" rider, and show up at 9:14, we'll probably have you start just after the contenders, so you won't get in the way of the mass start.

    I'm in!

I'll ride - just so nobody has to worry about being last.

I'll be slow enough it's hard to say if I'm a spectator or participant.

I'll probably start at 8:30 so I can be at the top when the kings roll in.
It's not slow, it's doing more MTB time.

You might be asking, "Jeez Paul(who the hell is this guy), something big must have come up huh?" My answer to that question is this: Nope, I am just a big *****. I will wait to be amazed at the times you guys are putting up and then get mad at myself because I could have claimed 65th place! Good luck everyone and remember that if you start to feel like absolute poo poo, you might be overheating. Be careful and realize that if tomorrow is not your day to set a PR, there are other days.

    King of Kennedy Pics

My wife rode up ahead of the first group and snapped shots from the hill leading to the false summit. She tried to get a shot or two of everyone, and apologizes (profusely) if she missed you or if your photo turned out a bit fuzzy.

Thanks a ton to Francis for setting this up, and to the timing volunteers at the start and the finish. That was a blast! (Although, it feels like I had a little campfire in the back of my throat from sucking down and exhaling that hot air.) We missed you out there, Menso!

Clark, thank your wife for the pics.
Jeff, thanks for putting up the times so quickly.

Fun day. That heat kept the Kings from breaking into the 20's!

Also fantastic to have Myrah come out again.

And I gotta say, the Rangers that came out today were super cool. Nice as can be.

Definitely a hot one today. As I suspected my week of alcoholic debauchery hurt me, so didn't hit my goal of cracking the 40 min barrier. Could only muster a tad over 42. Oh well...next yr, next yr!

Thanks Francis for setting this up. Thanks as well to JustJeff & Pisket (sorry if I missed anyone else here) for running the clocks.

Beat my goal by over 2 mins and my last year PR by 6'20", now I'm happy

I snapped a few pics from my iPhone at the finish line (I got about 30 finishers or so):
    Sorry, some are really dark...

Ah good times. New PR 48:43. Glad to see so many folks show up to throw down or just get out and ride. I met some new faces, familiar faces, and saw plenty of agonizing faces. For the record, Zen_Turtle is one f a s t turtle. You must have been quietly training at Integrate Performance Fitness, am I right?

That sucked! Well, it was kinda fun, in a hot, dry, tired, painful sort of way.

Thanks to Marco and Clark's wife for the great photos. Captures the pain really well. Also thanks to Jeff and Ali for timing, and Francis for getting it rolling this year. And congrats to everyone who broke a PR or just gave it their all.

Suffering together always make it better!

I haven't ever timed myself on Kennedy before so I guess this is my personal record.

Thanks Daryl for going back to look for Patrick. He was beat but it was evident once he got there he was really happy about it. He also enjoyed hanging out in town with everyone (originally he was going to head directly home). He was happy with his time considering he could have done it in half that last year! Now he can work towards Thanksgiving.

Thanks to the timer (Pisket?) for waiting for Patrick. I was about to head down until he said he was waiting to give him a time. Next time we will make a better effort to make the 9am start time! I'll probably have to wake him at 6am.

Very painful but fun but I wish Francios had said this was a boys ride.

and the new bike was awesome up and down!

That was miserable! As soon as we started it felt like my brain was in an oven.

Congratulations to everyone. That was my first time up Kennedy, and it is quite a climb. Many thanks to the picture takers (nice shots, wife-of-Clark), timers, and our fearless organizer.

OK, so when are we going do it again?

    That's hot.

It's awesome we pulled this off. In a summer where everyone's so busy with other stuff, many, many folks found the drive and the passion to do the climb. We knew it was going to be steep and we knew it was going to be hot. We suffered together and had a great experience.

The 'lack of' organization was impeccable! I don't like to organize and I usually want everyone to take care of themselves. Well it looks like my key crew Thomas was injured and out and JeffH & Carmen were out in Portland. Luckily, Justjeff was ready for my call and just needed a couple of volunteers. Ali, Jonala and Fast Eddy came in support and the logistics were done. The timing was ultra-smooth and there were no protests to the Olympic committee this year.

As you can see from the photos, a ton of riders showed up. Everyone suffered through that climb but it's a climb we'll remember for the season. The conditions were so tough that folks were typically 2 minutes off their pace last year.

We had a great picnic too after the event. Sorry I broke a lot of the pint glasses. I blame heatstroke!

The rangers Tom and Anthony came out. They were not happy about this 'event' and they asked that we get a permit next time. But that being said, they were very friendly and they asked we not speed on the way down.

50 people participated plus maybe 5 support crew that pedaled up. It was a good day.

So here's my photos. The complete set is here:
