click on "static forces on the rider" on the right and then "less weight". On Kennedy I got about a 2 minute difference with a 10 pound reduction...

Damn:madman: I still would have been over 40 min on my 22lb XC bike (14 lb difference)

That's about right: 10lb is the difference between my blur and nomad and 2-3mins is the time difference for me.
I guess rolling resistance doesn't play a big role (2.0 vs 2.3 tires)

That was a great time Saturday. It was good to see old friends and meet a few new ones. Thanks to Francis & Co. for making it all happen. See you at OLH this weekend.

Paging BigLarry to the white courtesy phone.

The potential energy gained in joules when climbing a hill is m*g*h or Mass (kg) * g (9.8 m/s/s) * Height gain (meters).

The average power is this energy in Joules divided by the time in seconds.

This average power is a lowest estimate, as extra energy will be expended on some wind resistance, power train inefficiency, tire inefficiency, bike frame and shock inefficiency, and so on.

For example, I calculate that Lance Armstrong on the Alpes de Huez time trial expended just under a MegaJoule (70 Kg * 9.8 * 1200 meters) in 40 minutes, or over 400 Watts. However, he was actually hitting a lot of wind resistance going up the hill at 15 MPH, and with other friction. Michael Charmichael said Lance's power output was more like 500-600 Watts! (Note a Horsepower is 760 Watts.) That power to weight ratio is what makes him the star.

Not quite. The forces this website is accounting for (let's ignore wind resistance) is the difference in potential energy gained by pushing higher weight to the same elevation. They accounting 10% for other overhead including RR and it may be right for road bike.
In MTB suspension inefficiency and bike goemetry contributes to substantially higher difference between XC and AM rig.

At the same fitness level at the season start I pushed Nomad (30.5lb) and Ibis (25lb) up to Kennedy with 3 min difference which can't be gained just by 5lb. Climbing Nevegals vs. SB8 would be also day and night which can't be accounted by the weight difference.

Hey, Nerds would account for wind resistance multiplied by the length of the leg hair and shorts slack factored in as well :p

 don't know what you're talking about, I'm riding a Nomad and a Blur XC... there is NO suspension inefficiency....

That explains it all. I think Nevegals are the slowest rolling tires ever, you can use same bike and switch tires to prove it (that means you have to climb it two more times.... ;) )

Ok, we're doing the Old La Honda Hillclimb this Saturday.

Who is in???

Who's gonna bring it on the mountain bike and show the roahdies?

1) I promised weeks ago that I would bring my mountain bike to show them. Same bike, same SS gearing, same tire pressure, same unlocked fork. I will wear something else though... :)

2) I can't promise that I will give all I got at the ride; but that's ok with me. :)

3) I've tested the mtbr beer bottle the day I got it and it worked just fine. (It was my wife who understood what "MTBR" meant on that glass. I always assumed that it merely looked like FLBR and HFBR. :)

4) BigLarry took pictures at the Kings but he hasn't posted them yet. :p

I'll be up for a roadie-ride, but Im going to have to rock my CX bike, no MTB for me. Where is the OLH ride going to start exactly?

As others have said, and is worth repeating, a big thanks to those who organized the Kings ride. The heat sucked but the ride was a lot of fun anyway. Looking forward to next year.

Since most roadies ride from home, the meeting place is the corner of Old La Honda and Portola road at 8:45.

We will be taking off at 9am sharp.

Most folks are 20-30 minute climbers. If you need more time than that, you can take off at 8:30 or at 8:45 and time yourself.

If you do not know Old La Honda aka OLH, then you have to check it out. It is them finest road climb ever!

Step aside biatches. The remedy for your nomadic lifestyle is here. Your record is not safe now;)

This bike has the potential to go over 15 mph on Priest Rock trail.

Not to take away from Francis's new bike but
Did they plow Kennedy since last Saturday?

Besides the bugs being enough to drive a sane person insane...it seemed more loose tonight, especially at the top.

I bail. :( No OLH ride for me.

My back is still healing so I will continue having easy rides. De Laveaga Park in Santa Cruz this Saturday. :-/

The Nomad is gone. It has a nice new owner from Santa Cruz.

J, I will see you at the mountain individual time trial.

Oh the Pain!
1. The Start of the Climb. I always get a major reality shock on that first hill.
2. Oh, the Pain! Captures what everyone feels.
3. A Trio making their way up.

3. Rensho (my first picture of him passing me missed)
4. Rensho (I caught a frontal picture by simply going back in time about a year)

So What's This?
Just what is Francois pointing out at the top of the hill?

Patrick Arrival
I may have been the slowest, but not the last. Patrick (son of mtbikermom) started late and was perhaps one of the last up. So I got to actually photograph someone else finishing!

1. Arrival at the top of the mountain.
2. Pointing to the score keeper?
3. Do all the finishers get a hug?

Picnic in the Park
1. Darryl (wddung) and JustJeff, our score keeper.
2. Bikers lined up in a row.

Thanks for the pics Larry!
Much appreciated. Had to miss the OLH time trial to join a few women friends and Socrates & Dwight in the UC. Very fun! I have much more clearance to my bottom bracket now.

I had to dig up this old thread to see if set a PR on my noon ride. 36:19... not quite but it was motivation and pain free. Light bikes fly on the ups but are ghey on the DH!

Trail is perfect and climbing traction is ideal!!! I rode pretty big tires at 20 psi and they rolled well. Front ring is a 36 and it worked well since I finally have 175 mm cranks on this one instead of those 170s.

Man you recuperate fast!
I am just feeling better today after the ride on Sunday.
Hey I just got the new 661 carbon Full face helmet (black) so sweet.
Thanks for the tip.
Great Job on Kennedy
You the Man Fran!!!

Tough one. I would do it in a heartbeat but the rangers are not kosher with it (and they read this board) and there's miniscule chance of getting a permit from Midpen.

So the venue might need to change or it has to be on the super low-key.

Mark, I feel pretty good pedaling but my upper body is sore from the beat down. I got one of those big rubber balls and have been doing some ab and back workouts with the kids.

I eat and sleep a lot this week. Tired and hungry from Demo.

All you gotta do is make a super-secret subforum and just let the real 1337 mtbers (i.e., no 5-0) have access to it and discuss things like that. Then, when y'all show up for the TT, it's just random chance. :D

I know this is a dead thread, but does anyone know how to get a hold of cesar chavez? I raced with him in 1992 for Pinnacle bike works, then Brittons. Cool to see Kennedy is going strong still. I havent been out there in 15 years. Did it in 32 and a half in1992 (from the log at keddedy road to the drop down dogmeat) on a Bontrager race lite. Like I said, I know this is a dead thread, but I'm excited to see it none the less.

OMG...not only do you have a time but a pic? I didn't think it was possible to be in worse shape than this but 2 years and many worries! Patrick and I started this thing...recording our weight with him to gain and me to loose. When I got on the scale it said "error". Dam, I'm in trouble!
