    Hurricane Florence

These poor people. There's a thread over on Off Camber where a couple of mtbr members have chimed in and given up-to-date info- it really personalizes it for me and brings it home. It's looking to be a whopper, with millions of people affected.

    Florence

    Hurricane Florence-hf.jpg

Basically every gas station in Wilmington is out of gas right now. Trucks are coming in and refilling and itís gone almost immediately. Stores are out of food. Batteries are gone all over town. Beer is even running out!

Iím all boarded up and stocked with water food and beer. All I need is some backup batteries, ice, and toilet paper could be a good idea.

Iím expecting power to be out for a few weeks.

It is pretty unbelievable. We will see much damage and many deaths. It's just so much water.

But as bad as is, there is a stronger storm. Bigger and higher winds and it's out in the open water. It's hitting the Philippines today. And then it will reload and hit the Vietnam area. It is UNREAL!!!

Florence is on the right. Mangkhut is on the left and it has the potential to affect 40 million people. It has wind speeds of 180 mph

What da hell man?? It's like the movies we used to watch about the apocalypse.

My buddy moved out to NC a couple of years ago for work. That job just dried up and he is trying to move back here. He is far enough inland that they should just get some heavy rain. The news makes it out to look like it is already an apocalypse.

Thanks, fc, but that's a bad link. Maybe it was this one? https://www.cnn.com/2018/09/14/asia/...ntl/index.html

While I find the frequency of these storms and global ocean temperatures a bit alarming, we're looking at another case of media hysteria here. Florence is only a category 1 storm and Mangkhut is a category 3. Not exactly record breaking stuff. In 2005, seven hurricanes reached a strength of cat 3 or higher...

You sure? I'm seeing reports that Mangkhut is up to 155-knots (Category 5).

And: The only aspect of the forecast that Florenceís decreasing max winds will impact is, perhaps unsurprisingly, the wind forecast. Weíre no longer forecasting winds of 120-130 mph at landfall. However, the coreís max winds were only ever forecast to impact a small part of the coast. That part of the coast, near Jacksonville and Wilmington, is still forecast to see very high winds in excess of 100 mph, which will still cause extensive damage.

I guess it just depends upon who you believe. This article says 125 mph, which is a category 3.

Your post is hysterically incorrect as the 33.89 inches near Swansboro, North Carolina was the most rain from a single tropical system in the history of North Carolina.
