    Hole in the Ground condition?

My wife and I will be heading to Tahoe next weekend for the 4th, and I was thinking about riding Hole in the Ground.

Is it still buried under snow, or is it rideable? Has anyone been out there recently?

    TY

Look at the pics from the D-ville thread...HITG is 1,000 feet higher and very shaded in spots. I would guess 8/1 but maybe sooner if there is a heat wave.

I was waiting for this thread!

HITG will not be rideable probably till early august. On a marginal snow year it is not rideable till late June/early July. Most of HITG faces north and is in the shade and is also very high in elevation (+7500 ft.) it will be sometime before it melts. Even lower trails like Western States and lower sections of the TRT are still under snow.

I have been up here all week. There's still snow (and lots) at like 6700 ft ish (at Donner Pass Rd.). HITG is definitely snowy :\

Rode it on Sat 7/14 and it was stellar. We threw in some Donner Lake Rim Trail action for an epic 28+ mile ride.

While there isn't any snow (bugs are making up for the lack of snow) I think the trail needs to see some love. There are several large downed trees that still need to be cut, and the dreaded pavers have failed in many places. This trail gets a lot of traffic so some wear and tear is to be expected. Just be nice to see a bit of love given to the trail.

Someone mentioned a loop of some sort was in the planning stage, making for a better return to the top. Anyone have details on that?

Ron, the Trust for Public Land was hoping to acquire property such that a new singletrack could be created to eliminate the annoying gravel road section. I'll check my source at the TPL to see where that stands.

    Hey gang,
John From the Truckee Donner Land Trust here. The HitG Loop lands acquisition is an ongoing project. We've been involved in a support role for TPL (photos, writeups, etc) and they have been going to DC for funds for this and a few other squares in the local land checkerboard. I don't think funds will be in place from the feds until next year. There is a loop flagged, but NEPA will need to be done prior to any construction.

PS There was a RAC grant scored to do a lot of work on HitG. There will be a BONC/FATRAC/TDLT/TTF/TAMBA trail weekend, and then USFS is hiring some ACE crews to tighten things up. Then plan to increase the flow and do some alternate lines as well.

    just a reminder...

There at least three Hole in the Ground trails open to mountain bikes in NorCal that I am aware of. There may be others. I had to read down a bit to figure out which one this thread is about.
