It has been so hard. All week Dan has been posting pics of himself and friends riding and saying how much he misses it. Only a few short days and he will be back on the dirt.

So I shipped the bike to him yesterday and it should be to him in Idaho by Friday. I could ask Jen to FB live it or of it would be possible. I think It would be hard as they dont know the exact time the bike is getting to the house.

At the very least use the phone to record some video. If it's FB live sharing it may not be as easy later. My only advice would be to hold the phone sideways so you get the widescreen aspect ratio instead of the cropped video.

*Some phones don't record it the same way in both orientations.

Ahh, just ask her to take a video. Facebook live for this is only effective when it's a set time and everyone knows when to tune in.

GREAT SUCCESS! Dan is a man of few words and just by this reaction I know we have changed his life. Dan is in total shock. I talked to him for a minutes before his doctors appointment and I dont think it has set in all the way. He should be getting home soon to set the bike up so more pics to come.

In what world is a brain MRI just a doctor's appointment? Y'all exist on a separate plane of bad-assery.

Glad we could send a little sunlight his way. You're a good dude, MZorich.

No pressure on the guy, but if he decides to road trip out to Tahoe or Downieville with that bad machine, I'll organize the group ride and buy the burgers/beer. This is an awesome uplift on a rainy Friday.

I'm going to formulate a story on this to be published this weekend.

I need some comments from this crowd.

What about this story makes you happy?

Why did you choose to participate and/or help out?

ps. got all the details from MZorich already.

I chose to participate mainly due to the heartfelt writeup in the original post. A well-written plea to help someone whose sanity teeters due to his service.

I gave because it's the right thing to do for a vet in need! Being a veteran myself and having a son who gave his life for this great country who in their right mind wouldn't help this vet.

While I would have chosen to donate to the cause for ANY worthy candidate, the fact that he was a military veteran scores huge points with me as I come from a military family with both my kids currently serving as officers in the US Army. That he has PTSD issues and riding bikes will help him mentally is just another bonus. I know nothing does as much good for me mentally as "cleaning" a feature that's tormented me or completing a great ride. I hope this veteran gets to experience all of that and more on a much more frequent basis!!

fc, the write up you did was awesome!!

To everyone else, I can not thank you all enough. Its a dream come true for me and for Dan. When my wrist is heeled next month I would love to set up a group ride to those who would be interested. I will have many cases of IPA in the back of my jeep to say thank you after the ride.

Help out a veteran who's having a hard time.

Best thread ever. My answer as to why, it feels good to be able to help someone in need, who spent most of his life in service of our country, and make a small difference. Hopefully this helps him get through the hard days.

It's so cool to see this all transpire. I donated $10 or $20 a while back, and thought I'd check in to see how much has been raised. This is pretty above and beyond what I expected. That is a sweet bike and riding gear. Your buddy is lucky to have such a great friend!

It is more then I expected as well. When I started it I kind of figured I would raise 300-500 bucks at most. In my mind I was trying to figure out how I would turn that into a bike I would be proud to ride. Well after just a few days I quickly realized just how amazing the mtbr/cycling community truly is. Im not a great friend, Im just someone that decided to put action to the words I preach. In the military and vet community we talk a lot about supporting vets, and the 22 vets a day that take there lives. Unfortunately for most they just talk or do 22 push ups a day. After one of my best friends took his life in September I decided it was time to do more the " raise awareness." Anyone in this community could have done it, I was just the one that wrote the post and got the ball rolling. I also happened to know a super awesome dude that enjoys a nice trail and could use a sweet bike.

    Awesome story!

I hope just the sight of that bike helps Dan feel better when he's having a bad day. Looks like he's got some great riding areas in his neck of the woods. Perfect!

You're the man dude. Just like all the other guys that did their small part to contribute to the sea of awesomeness.

All I did was try to capture everyone's magic. I did work on a Saturday morning though... before a ride, to get this in time for Veteran's Day.

Wish we had photos in military gear but they didn't have one together. Any individual photos Mzorich?

No, but you can put it on youtube as 'unlisted'. Only folks who know the url will see it.

Then put the url here. You can delete later.

That's super cool! I can tell he still is having a hard time trying to wrap his head around it happening. That's awesome he's out there getting some single track therapy!

So I just saw this awesome thread. Given that it's the day before Thanksgiving, I want to say I am thankful for each of you who participated in this genuine act of kindness. It is so inspiring to read about people helping others who are in need. You are all great people.

Hey everyone I wanted to give you all a bit of an update now that its warming up. Dan has seriously posted a pic of him on the bike everyday for the last 3 months. He has worked his was back up to getting 7 to 10 miles with 1k of climbing. He also really likes to go find little skills areas and work on tech climbs .

But on to the better news. The amount that Dan has talked about dark thoughts, and issues with his PTSD has gone down so much. I dont think I have seen a post from him on facebook and he hasnt mentioned anything to me since he got the bike. Again everyone, job well done. Its cool to see someones life be so impacted by something as simple as a bike.

Awesome. I hope everyone who suffers from these issues can find their own "bicycle". When you're lucky enough that your "bicycle" is an actual bicycle you end up with an awesome community who cheer you on when you succeed and offer a hand up when you fall down.

I honestly had a conversation about this the other day wondering how he was doing! That's so cool to read. Stoked he is out there keeping the wheels dirty!

He has been really good. He is riding almost everyday in some way. His bigger rides are around 12 miles with 1k vert, but he has also been riding around town and to his medical appointments if he can.

I have personally noticed a huge change in his spirit and attitude as well. I rarely see the dark facebook posts from him and alot less talk of PTSD. Overall I think he is in a better place and the bike had a huge impact on him.
