Handbuilt Bike Show - Insider scoop

    Hey All...
As an employee of the Sac Convention Center I'll be spending the next couple days getting paid to ogle all the sweet bikes at the show. They're moving in today so I thought I'd wet your appetite with a few insider pics. Exhibitors are just starting to move in so I'll try and get a few more as the day goes on.

Looks like it's going to be a sweet show!
    Bryan

    Form Bikes

Sorry for the fuzzy pic. These are incredibly nice bikes. Check out the fat tires on the one in the background. Detail on these is amazing.
Overall...as you guys probably know...far more road than mountain bikes at the show. Moots has a huge booth full of mountain bikes but most are 10x10 with a handful of killer road bikes. Titanium everywhere!

Sorry to keep you waiting fellas!

Some incredible bikes in there today. Pics are crappy but you get a sense of what's here. Belt drives are everywhere. Green is the new white and bamboo is the new carbon. Did I mention the free beer samples!

Here's some of my pics from yesterday. I volunteered in the morning doing bike parking for SABA, then walked around the show for a while afterwards. At the MTBR booth I met Gregg, who was pretty cool to talk to.

    Many more pics here.

Before taking the still pictures I posted above, I did a complete walk-through while recording video continuously. I edited out all the views of the floor as I was walking between booths, so here's 24 1/2 minutes of nothing but bicycles. I didn't get every single bike there was, but I'm pretty sure I got all the ones that stand out in the crowd.

Yep! So stoked! I was admiring Eriksen's winning bike when Potts walked by and said "Congratulations!". I was a bit confused, not realizing they called it a tie between the two builders.

I was checking out your bike. Very nice! I was the Asian guy wearing a grey hoodie holding two beers. I didn't get a chance to ask if I was talking to Tyrone Shoelaces cuz your buddy came by to chat, so I moved on to score more beers.

I'm locked in our booth though and no one has brought me a pliny.

Had a blast a the show, got to meet the legendary Francois, and saw maybe a hundred old friends who don't often gather in the same building.

As one of my friends put it, the show was like Interbike without all the stuff and the people you don't care whether or not you see. With the exception of a modestly sized Shimano exhibit, no major bike companies were represented. Best of all, a reasonable distance from home and I didn't have to go to Las Vegas. At Interbike, the public is not invited, and the point is to sell stuff to bike dealers, so the atmosphere is hard sell and if you aren't in the industry, no one has time to talk to you. At NAHBS the emphasis is on showing work you are proud of to other passionate cyclists, and if you sell some, that's nice too.

Rode up with Chris Chance and Steve Wilde, an old friend who worked for Fisher some years ago. At the show we added Sarah McCullough to our group; she is a post grad student working on a PhD in Mountain Bike culture. Of course I have known Chris Chance for decades, but he lived in Somerville then and it's not like we ever got to spend a day together, wallowing in our mutual passion.

After the show we were joined for dinner by frame builder Chris Igleheart and Ron Andrews, a couple of blasts from the past who had exhibits. Ron rode as a professional for Fat Chance during the '80s.

The list of old skoolers we ran into included Tom Ritchey of course, who had his original MTB on display, Steve Potts, who was displaying his original "Art of the Mountain Bike" show bike from 1989, Scot Nicol, Ed Litton, Gary Helfrich, Bruce Gordon, Joe Breeze, Ross Shafer, Maurice Tierney and Kent Erickson, who picked up two show awards while we were there. We missed Gary Fisher, who left about the time we arrived, but I heard that he and Tom Ritchey shared a long conversation in Tom's Booth.

Everyone was overjoyed to see Chris, maybe a little less to see me.

I did a quick walk-through yesterday before the NAHBS Artbike bike parade. It was packed, so I'm glad I got most of my picture-taking done on Friday.

I also met Francois. I got to talk to him for a few seconds before other people showed up and he had to get back to work. Nice meeting you Francois!

I have a few more pictures from yesterday which I will upload after I'm done mtb'ing at Foresthill Divide. For now, here's the silliness from the Artbike bike parade. There's a few "Burning Man" type bikes in here, including a pedal-powered palm tree that you can see in the first part of the video.
Unfortunately he had mechanical trouble and didn't make it very far.

Hell yeah. They were charging 6 bucks a can for Oskar Blues. Eff that! 2 o'clock tasting, I double fisted and got a taste of Mama's Little Yella Pils and G'Knight Imperial Red. Then I went back and got a taste of Old Chub Scotch Ale. Then at 3 o'clock, Ritchey was giving away free t-shirts and pint glasses with big pours of Pyramid Hef. The best beer ever... Free!

Oh, and then Rubicon for some Hoptimum after the show.

Thanks to everyone for taking pics and taking the time to post them up!

Here's a set from the Dirt Rag folks on Flickr:

There was a room off to the side where they had an area set up with lighting and a backdrop to photograph individual bikes.

It takes a little determination when you're under a time crunch. We chatted with probably 15 booths too.

Great to be there. Sorry I couldn't chat more. I didn't see anyone holding a Pliny so I had to keep rambling with our video schedule.

Here's the first one. I think we did 70 and it just went downhill from here. Funk Cycles got me a cold growler of Pyramid IPA though late Sunday. Every interview after that started with a toast

Thanks everyone for posting the photos. I had a busy weekend but was able to get down to see the show for the last two hours it was open Friday afternoon. Met Steve Potts, who teased my daughter about children being the center of their parent's universe. Was able to show my kid the wonders of all the classic bikes and the new builds, and saw her completely overwhelmed by the visual input that the show was. It was her first time being at something like that, and the artistry, workmanship, and bicycle culture impressed her so much when the lady at the booth for the frame building program at the University of the Fraser Valley gave her the spiel, my kid seriously started rethinking her future career plans.

I think Friday was kind of quiet compared to what Saturday looked to be. I saw Gregg at the MTBR booth, but I didn't want to disturb his interview process to say hello.

Thanks. Just keep looking at the home pages of mtbr and road. Looks like we're publishing 5 a day. I went straight from Laguna Beach riding so I wasn't super pumped to be in a convention hall. But after the first few conversations, I knew I was in a good space with the gods of mountain biking and frame building.

Here's some Laguna riding at the end of this video.

    on every hill...

    for an hour...

    straight...

awesome bike show, my first one ever, checked it out the last day. pretty overwhelming and it was kinda hard to take it all in. great to see all the oregon builders stuff up close. got to meet ira ryan and his buddy (name?) that built the crazy trailer w/the king bits and great porteur racks as well.

living so close to a good handful of builders made me pretty bias i guess, we're so spoiled around here. the retrotecs were hot as well as the black cats. hunters dirt tourer was also one of my favorites. now i really want a custom road bike even more _________ (insert boo). really loved all the cargo bikes or mostly any bike w/racks and fenders, just really in to everyday useful bikes.

met and drove up w/daniel from the pushing the pedals blog just through an email since he was looking for a ride up to sacto, great dude w/a lot of experience riding and traveling. shuttled him, cass gilbert, and another fellow back to santa cruz sun nite. those dudes were gonna ride back up to the city on dirt/pavement. i had to work the next day, suck. if you've never seen cass's blog you should check it out, i'm a devout follower while out riding. got some pics of some mtbr locs, if i get the chance i'll post 'em up.

either that is the flexiest seat I've ever seen, or there is clearly wiggle in the head of that dropper post. Can you say for sure which it was?
