Going to California, with achin in my Heart.... for sweet single track
Hey Guys, Going to be in Fairfield California, 3/30- 4/7 lookin to hook up some single track, got some tips already; China Camp, Rockville, Annadel. Anyone got any tips, trail maps, etc. Taking my GF SF100 for a little down hill fun. Cat 1 racer from Mid Atlantic, planning two day trips, maybe some local stuff too. Hit me up, Possum rider
PS Here' a pic with some guy I met from NorCal, Gary something or other..
Rockville is the obvious local choice from Fairfield. It's fun but confined to a very small area. It'll definitely be worth your while to venture elsewhere.
My top two suggestions:
Take I-80 East to Auburn. You can easily put together a ride with 5000+' of climbing/descending. It shouldn't take much over an hour to get there from Fairfield.
Head out to the coast and ride Soquel Demonstration Forest ("demo"), near Santa Cruz. Beautiful area with excellent riding. Drive time very dependent on traffic/time of day.

Head northwest to Santa Rosa and check out Annadel State Park. Best mtn biking on Earth (IMHO).
Follow up your ride with beer and grub at Russian River Brewing Co, home of Pliny the Elder.
I like the way you think, On my list for a day trip!

Good Stuff saw the video on Tamarancho, looks fun, right out the back door from where I'm staying! Any group rides?? Like to hop on if I can, stuff looks Flow-licious!!!!
Possum out
Yo, JMac the Tamarancho map is a little sketchy, can you send me a pdf here; chrisjackson479@gmail.com? Thanks Bud, owe you a beer!
Yeah I thought I deleted that web based map I sent. When you buy your $5 day-use pass at Sunshine Bikes, or Fairfax Cyclery depending on where you'll start ride, they'll give you one. There's also a few map dispensory boxes on sign posts out on trail (sometimes they're empty so get one at bike shop). Try this one for now:
It's not a long ride, you may want to do cw/ccw loops, even that may only be ~2.5 hours given your abilities. There's way more areas to hit outside the camp confines that you can incorporate into this ride too. Hopefully you will be with some other locals that can give you an extended tour.
when i lived in napa my dad and brother used to ride skyline park the place were they used to hold the UCI world cup back in 99, from what I've heard it's a pretty good ride with lots of climbing and single track it's like 20 or 30 minutes from Fairfield.

Our "All, ok almost all of Skyline" ride this past Saturday:
Skyline looks good, as does Tamarancho, should be able to get a couple of rides in early morning or late in the day. gotta spend some time with my gal and her family. but I'm cleared for two get away days, thinking Annadel and kinda intrigue by some of the stuff in Santa Cruz, Soquel Demonstration Forest? What's the scoop on this area? Oh by the way thanks for the pics Jmac,, Skyline looks like my local for sure, should be fun. I'll be doing a six hour endurance on the 3/23 "Cranky monkey" and another one the week I get back, "dragon's Tail" down in Virginia so I gotta maintain my training routine.
Let me know if you guys have any groupo rides, love to get out with you and your crew!

Like others already said, Annadel and Auburn will both be around an hours drive from Fairfield with 30+ miles of trails at each. Rockville, Skyline are the 2 nearest trails, but only 12-15 miles each. Still worth a ride on days your short on time.
Fuenstock,
Nice wrap up, got a pretty good handle on it now. What about Tamarancho, what's that about 40 minutes drive from Fairfield?? Given my limited time which would be a better ride Auburn or Tamarancho?? I noticed theres a brewpub in Fairfax?? Still toying with the idea of Soquel Demonstration, but that looks like at least a 2 hr drive???

Demo looks really cool, whats the drive like? I'll be coming from just North of Fairfield, Ca, in the hills towards Napa.
Yeah, it's far from where you are for sure. I'd say 2 hours+ maybe but somehow put on your bucket list if you come back. I'd stick with Annadel and others closer. Try to find a guide for Annadel though because there are definitely really right ways to go and not so right ways to go. Extremely fun riding there...definitely hit Lawndale...so fun!
A couple of places that hasn't been mentioned is Oat Hil out of Calisotga, Angwin And China Camp you would need a guide at Angwin and China Camp to hit the good stuff.

If you want "Riding in Redwoods" w/o quite as long a drive, there is always Skeggs.
It's definitely on the XC side of things and does require some steep fire road climbing to put together a good loop, but I think Blue Blossom and Giant Salamander would be on most people's highlight list for Bay Area Trails. It's not a place to go without some prior knowledge as a few wrong turns and you can spend a couple hrs climbing washed out
fire roads and miss all the good stuff.
This is just IMHO, Annadel has better trails and less brutal climbing, but there are parts of Skeggs that are pretty magical if you have not spent much time around redwoods.
