Bumped into Alex (Schralph Macchio on the TGR forums) in the parking lot, and we skied/boarded together for the whole day. Super fun!

Ski Patrol was dropping charges all over the place; the Cirque ripped a big one and there were smaller releases all along the ridges. The snow was heavy on top, windbuffed, grippy, and fun. Super sketchy snowpack, though: upside down density snow and windslabs rested on two separate persistent weak layers. Geeky snow nerd stuff, I know. What this means in plain English is this:

An inbounds slide at Alpine Meadows caught a ski patroller, he has since passed away. And a boarder was caught and killed in an avalanche inbounds at Donner Ski Ranch. RIP.

Wow looked like perfect holiday conditions up on the slopes, weather wise. Bummer about the casualties tho.

Heh, did some backcountry skiing with Alex last Saturday

Here is a photo from x-mas eve in the backcountry, staying safe in low angle trees, snow pack is a S*&% sandwich on top of a &*%t sandwich right now.
