    Echo Summit, 1917-albert-budd-1917.jpg

I just saw this photo on facebook and thought folks here would be interested. The guy in the photo, and his friend rode their bikes from Sacramento to Echo Summit in 17 hours and 29 minutes. Their names were Albert Budd and Eugene Hepting. Hepting was the photographer, and the photo is from the Eldorado Trail facebook page.

I wonder what kind of tires they ran? (j/k)
Seriously, though - that's rad. I don't think I could do that today on a rigid mtn bike. Thanks for posting!

I think this cool on so many levels. Dirt and sand roads, probably rocky with stretches of sand, rock, and manure to dodge. On the positive side, not too many cars and the water was safe to drink. I wonder where they stayed overnight? I see a frame pump on one of the bikes, but not much other gear.

Some more about their route, from one of the riders:

Miserable conditions, even for a modern MTB:

    Kyburz:

Anyone know where this Tallac building was? I'm assuming Lake Tahoe?:

    Same structure in 1963:

An unrelated adventure, but the same protagonists getting ready to hit the Culvert Trail when it was brand new :

That's pretty *****in, That was over in the camp Rich area near Valhalla, as there are great views of Tallac from there.
The Tallac Historic Site | Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit | Oh, Ranger!

I think I know the area were that first pic was taken, gonna have to take this photo up there and see if I can figure it out.
