    Downieville Camping with kids

I know this topic has been hit before but after looking for a while I could not find exactly what I was looking for.

Am going to be heading to Downieville or surrounding area Mid August. Wondering about recommendations for camp ground for me and my two girls ages 7 and 9. Hopefully near a lake that we can fish in...some nice hikes and what not. Something not to far from town as well incase I wanted to run into town with them for some ice cream or what not as well. Just want them to have the best time.

Any help or suggestions would be great! thanks everyone

We stayed at Diablo last month for the MTBR Gathering. It's a nice small campground, there were actually quite a few kids around all having a good time. Site #13 is good if you can snag it; it's fairly private and is maybe 50 yards from the creek.
    Why?

Because we like the taste of freedom; because we like the smell of danger. ~ E. Abbey

Rocky Rest isn't the prettiest campground but I think it's the most kid friendly immediately around Dville because the swimming is epic. Great hiking right from camp as well. Check it out.

Seeing as you're from SLO, I'm sure you have a high-clearance 4x4 vehicle.

Find the Gold Lake 4x4 campground. Go on Thursday, if possible, so that you can get a lakeside campground, as they are all taken come Friday. Worst case is that you get an inland site and have to walk 50 yards to the pristine lake.

The only negative is that you occasionally get Monster Energy-swilling flatbillers listening to Creed all night long camping next to you.

Hey John...is Packer Saddle where Gathering has been in past?

Dirtvert how far is the Diablo campground from a lake or fishing? Stream it nearby worth fishing?

Etuck how far is Rocky Rest from town?

Any other suggestions? I was hoping for something on a lake that has fishing and swimming for dog and kids. And close enough to town that it isn't to big of a hassle to get there.
