donner lake to auburn via soda springs road + foresthill road......

    Howdy

    for those that are interested:

soda springs road/foresthill road is all rideable now...

there's a little bit of snow but only a few sections to walk.

    1 brown bear

a few small creeks to cross but all were rideable on a cx bike....

a few trees down but easy to climb over

total ride is 100 miles...took about 6.5 hours with about 8500 feet of climbing...

    cheers

You can start at Ice Lakes Lodge in Soda Springs. That is where the Soda Springs road turns to dirt.

Nice. Gotta love when a "downhill" ride has 8.5K' of climbing!

FYI - For those who like riding on any part of the Western States Trail in the Tahoe National Forest (e.g. the Tahoe-Sierra 100 course), the equestrians are working hard to eliminate bicycles and motos from it. More info coming soon. Your help will be needed.

If the equestrians are successful in closing the sections of the western states now open to bikes, please do not go around letting the air out of all the tires on the horse trailers and trucks towing them at the trailheads that used to allow bikes, thanks in advance….

How about CR*PPING on their hood as this would really stink for all of us MTB'rs not to be able to enjoy the Western States Trail....nobody is on it anyway??

What's the minimum sensible road/CX tire to ride Soda Springs Rd? Just last weekend I was searching for the snow conditions on the road, so this is very timely.

I'd like to ride Roseville to Truckee (on a roadbike), but don't want to pedal more tire I need all that way. From some of Sean Allen's past trip reports, it seems like a practical way to get to Hole In the Ground if you don't want to drive :-), but I'm not going to pedal my MTB that far.

Soda Springs road gets very rocky and rough. Especially up near the top. I'm no expert on roadie or CX tires, but I think you will want something substantial to handle the abuse.

I've only ridden the last 10 miles of Soda Springs Rd, but I remember it being fairly loose and deep in places. I'd go for something fatish, with not too much tread. There are bits I'd be walking down on a CX bike, but then I suck...

i don't post or pm on epic rides cuz i don't want to ride with people i don't know...for me this ride may take 4 hours. for you it may take 12...or, it may take 4 for you and 12 for me...i'd rather just ride at my pace...

if you'd like to do some local stuff and we can go from there...

as far as which tires, how much pressure,..etc....
does it really matter? its in the wilderness....conditions change daily...JUST PEDAL
