    Did somebody mess with this?

Hopefully someone is just fixing this, if not there will be hell to pay.

Uh. Can I respectfully ask a dumb question? What is wrong with that sign? It appears to be a worthy memorial to a good rider.

It looks like it's missing the chain links around the border of the sign...

Unfortunately, soulless people are everywhere. Not just on TV. Hopefully, the creep will be caught and taught a lesson. But perhaps it is just under repair.

That'd be quite the technical crash. Ripping off the entire outer chain while leaving everything else intact. Let's face it. It was vandalized. It should be fixed, though. If for no other reason than to show the pathetic vandal that the power of our community is stronger than the destructive spirit of the human nature.

Another odd thing - in the original undamaged picture the water bottle cage is silver, on the damaged version it looks black?

    hmmm?

What a jerk whoever did that. WTF is wrong with people these days?

Huh. I was there on Sunday and could have sworn the bottle & flowers were there; not sure about the chain. Seems likely that this happened over the past couple of days. Who goes to CC on a Monday or Tuesday, to deface a memorial no less? I waggle my accusatory finger in the direction of local militant retired bike haters. If the rangers didn't approve of a sign there, they would have just removed the whole thing, not defaced it. Sickness.

BTW: The Oak Ridge Trail has now been widened/bowdlerized similar to the work that was done on Shoreline last season. While having more accessible trails is a nice idea in principle, I'm fearful of the plans for the rest of the park.

    This is why

I really hate the human race. People can be so selfish, uncaring and destructive. There is no reason for what happened to that memorial other than a stupid human or humans felt they had the right to destroy a beautiful memorial. People are just a cancer to our planet. If we were wiped off the earth this planet would be a better place. Of course not all people are bad just the majority.

I did a quick loop on my new Fisher Rig on Monday AM and stopped at the sign. It appeared to me at the time to be different and now I know why. The only people in the park monday AM was me and about 40 senior citizens that came on a big bus and were hiking in the park. Don't think it was them. It was either a militant Sierra Club hiking nazi or just your run of the mill vandal.

    Sad....

I almost always stop at the sign during a ride and reflect about the biker that died there. It is a nice memorial to a fellow biker.

I was also saddened by all the "trail work" being done in the park. That is more like trail destruction. So much for CC being a great place to bike on the front side if they plan on doing that to the whole loop....

Honestly don't see why they're doing the trail work. Justification for future budget?

It just seems to make it less enjoyable for hikers anyway because now its just plain ugly.

Oh that sucks It was there in its completeness on Sunday.. matter of fact, we were explaining it the details to our friends from NC.

With the strong anti-MTB sentiment in Marin, it could be anyone Karma will get them what's coming to them though.. messing with someone's memorial is truly sad.

Yeah, China Camp used to be a lot of fun, but now they're making it as unfun as possible

It sucks that someone would do this on purpose but it is possibly that some tool crashed into the corner with the bottle cage, catching the chain and all from the border without anything else being damaged.

As for the trail work, I read somewhere that they were doing this as a cyclic manner of trail maintenance. Enough erosion had occurred that they felt they needed to regrade with an outslope over a 5' swath to correct the situation. From what I understand, the trail will be allowed to grow back over and re-naturalize.
There are no stupid questions but there are A LOT of inquisitive idiots.
