Demo forest Ride Report - May 5

Yesterday, the excuses ran out and the old mtbr guard made it to Demo Forest. Saturday, it was hot but Sunday, it was cool and windy. I was worried about fallen branches on the trail but I got my ass up and got my stuff together.

I have a love affair with a couple 650b bikes right now for the Demo jumps but I have a new 29er test bike for a week so I felt compelled to ride it and 'jump' it at Demo. Oh well, things I have to do for the j. o. b.

We got to the parking lot and none of my crew was there. Instead, there were about 30 cars of these bikers where I did not recognize a single one of them. I think it was a meetup group and they were riding down Aptos Creek fire road from Demo.

A few minutes late and the regulars Switchbaxr, Kmax, Squashyo, Markmass, Tburger, Dan51 and many others arrived. We shot the shit and we were off. This was a special ride because of the food. Ron aka Switchbaxr was cooking and it is always an adventure when he brings out the happy pans. I didn't really care what kind of ride I did as I was sore from a week of rallying.

What commenced is one of the greatest rides in Demo ever. We did the singletrack on the climb then at the top, we did upper B and lower B. They were truly incredible.

The growing groups got back together and our plan unfolded. It was going to be Saw Pit and Braille.

About the test bike. Ok, it is a 29er but it is the one that is making waves. It's called the S-Works Enduro with 150mm front and rear travel. Going down Ridge, I had to brake check several times to avoid ramming to the fast riders in front of me. Oh it was on!!! I let Switchbaxr go ahead on the Corral intersection and it was rally time again. Dan51 was right behind me and two new guys, Ben and Mike Manuel were in formation.

What happened next was magical. We did every jump in sight and Ron did not stop. We fricken railed it all the way through the rock garden and went full bore. Ron hammered the climb after the rock garden and kept going. Dan and I paused and reveled in the stoke. We then hit the rest of Saw Pit and started high fiving.

I was so stoked with the bike that I had to let Ron try it. We swapped bikes and we were off. Climb then Braille and it was again an orgy of cornering and ayer. It was a special day as everyone pushed themselves and no one even dropped a chain.

Got back to the car and it was food time. I'm running out of descriptions so I'll let the photos describe the picnic. Let's just say we were still there three hours later.

Thanks for sharing the stoke! You were already ripping on that bike when we saw you on Friday, so it's not surprising that you continued at Demo.

It was a pretty crazy day out there with so many people. Did you see that dad with 2 young kids? I'm pretty sure he said it was their 2nd ride ever, and they had ridden Quicksilver for the first ride--but "it was too hard for them"! Hope they made it out okay! Everybody else that we saw was tearing it up and having a blast.

On Friday was a frickn awesome death march for me. No lunch, ran out of water, just sat by my car for 30 minutes sipping water.

Yup, I saw them. They were right by Braille and the two kids were walking up with their bikes. One of the kids could hardly take a step and could not keep his head up.

I think they were about 8 years old. I'm guessing they did one Braille or Saw Pit loop in 5 hours. I'm all for getting kids out riding but this one looked like a monumental mistake. Live and learn i hope.

    reflecting on yesterday:
    - Bacon as an appetizer to 5K footies
    - PR's broken all over the place
    - Blast of a run down Sawpit and a run down Braille on a super Specialized Enduro 29er

    - Great times, good grub and fantastic beer to share afterwards
    - sharing the day with my bros...fantastic! ...still stoked!
thanks to everyone for a memorable day...grateful to have you as friends!

Here's the Switchbaxr video. Fast forward to the 2 minute mark to get to Braille.

I'm pretty much a generic round-eye! I was squashyo's wing man. We also ran out of water and were fried by the time we got to our car. But that Felton burrito place revived us!

Btw- too bad about those kids. We saw them on the beginning of Ridge, and Josh recommended that they go down Braille. In my mind I did a little Scooby "Huh?" But at least they could've walked down it, and cut out a bunch of miles. That's a long walk out for little kids...

ere's the bike. Ron's never ridden it before and that was his first descent on it. It rides like a familiar steed. Only thing is Ron rode the front with 120mm travel instead of 150mm by mistake!!!!

Every ride with Ron is a discovery of how good a rider he really is.

Those new dudes Benny and mike were amazing as well.

Timmyc and team Buycell came by and hung out. He started complaining about how tore up Braille was. I looked at his ibis tranny and just smiled!

    Thanks All!

I got a late start on Sunday waiting for a sitter to watch my kids. Would have been fun to get in the ride, but caught the after-party and helped close down the bar. I got in a loop by myself and the trails were really good. I hit several jumps that I had never would have hit on my smaller bikes.

Nice riding Ron... I wanna ride that trail like that. You and Ben tore it up on Braille!

Once again, Thanks to all that shared an amazing selection of beers that I had never tried and to Ron for throwing down the goods! Food was amazing and hanging out at the after-party chatting with everyone rocked!

A couple beers that I had never tried...

Big props to the Ron and the mtbr crew. Probably my first ride with this group. I've been on other rides with Ron but not too many. He and I go way back and it's always "Pure Awesomeness" when we get together for a ride.

What can I say, I got behind Francis on Lower Sawpit and he was railing and ripping that S Works Enduro 29er. The grin on his face at the end was priceless.

Then I got the chance to ride behind Ron and Benny (in the video) and only wished that I had a go pro for all to witness what was going down right in front of my own eyes. Benny and Ron going big, hitting every hit with tale whips, and trading back and forth on the lead. In the video Ron's Wohoooo's on every hit just sums it up. SOO EPIC that I got to hang and rail with those guys on braille.

Then we ended the day with the Happy Pan???? I don't think I need to say anymore. The pics show it all. Good times everyone and glad to have met you all. That's one for the books! Hope to ride with you guys again soon. Epic Epic day in Demo!!!

When we were giants: I was doing whips when I normally have no game. One time I pulled sideways so much that I unclicked. I fell back down to earth and the pedals clicked back in. It was good day.

Didn't know you guys riding on Sunday. We started early and mostly met crew or two only discovering whole parking stuffed with cars at the end of the ride.
Sunday was primo for sho. Completed my final recovery rounding up last set of stunts I was staying shy after crash. New bike (HD) helped as well . Awesome grubs, if not Cinco party we went to after, I'll be jealous.
I used to run tubes like you are, but then I got thorn in my wheel.

Sunday was my first official ride in CA, in fact my first ride in the USA and I was stoked to say the least. Squashyo was kind enough to take me down Braille and it was everything I hoped it would be and more.
Everyone we met was super friendly too. Awesome day, can't wait to go back.

I think we might have caught up with your group at the bottom of Braille. Some of the people in those photos certainly look familiar.

The ride on Sunday was awesome! Big props to Switchbaxr and Benny--you guys were killing it!!

I broke off from the main group and went down Corral and up Sulpher. I met Rogan at the top of Sulpher/Ridge and we tried catching the group down Sawpit and up Hinhs to Sulpher. Rogan headed back to the parking lot and I went up Sulpher again. The 2nd time up Sulpher really sapped me and I started cramping shortly after getting to the bottom of Braille and pedaling up Hihns. I walked, pedaled slowly, rested, cramped/bonked, got passed by tonnes of folks who encouraged me (Thanks!), and finally made it out to the parking lot just as Ron and his happy pan were creating magic.

I can't tell you how happy and relieved I was to find good friends, cold beers, and a mix of delicious hot and cold food waiting for everyone! Thanks to everyone that joined us, brought beer, drinks, and food to share, helped set-up, and cleaned-up. Demo's a special place and days like these make it even more so.

We asked about you and folks said you were lying down on the ground beside the trail. So we remained calm and left you some food

No, different group. The MTBR crew like to wear one size too small spandex with a potato stuffed in the front.
I'm not sure how this works.

Dude, you have a big heart to take the new guys out.

But you should have entroduced me to the internet celebrities dirtvert and wazzatron. And how can you make them miss the post-ride party? It went on from 1:30-5pm and we hosted waves and waves of wanderlusts.

There was even this dude who didn't even ride but made the party. Brought his wife even as I think he promised her a gourmet picnic in the redwoods.

You'll have to ask them...I had to get to my daughter's soccer game. I think Dirtvert had to clean the house before his girlfriend got home and Wazzatron had to go get laid. We did enjoy a quick snack at Summit though.

    Next time...which is when exactly?

Francis- Squash said it was going to be pretty much just an Amway meeting with bad beer, and he had to get home to host a Tupperware party. Next time!

In other news, I'm following in your pedal strokes and took my first spin with flats last night. Let the shin grating begin!
Friends don't let friends ride e-"bikes" on dirt.

You met him out of the corner of your eye. We were in full on sprint mode between Sulfer and Braille trying to hand with Ron when we passed them. I thought for sure you were going to yell Strava!!!

Squashy is awesome to show peeps Demo. I am forever grateful to him for introducing me to that place. My first real MTB ride in ~10 years was at the Gap, and I was like yeah it's cool but not quite what I wanted. Somehow ended up riding with Josh at Demo for my next ride, which was probably over my head but I at least made it back out and was hooked. I believe that's when I learned that videos don't do a place justice. Now a year and a half later I can probably almost keep up with him out there.

Awwwwwww yeah. That's when I ayered it out pulled the bike horizontal as my rear wheel almost passed me and gave Josh a fist bump. That's my story and I'm sticking too it.

    Hahaha.

That is my big question, when is 'next time'? I'll bring beer, two portions for Squash as I already owe him.
