CCCX #1 Race Reports
Wow! We got lucky today and had perfect conditions at Fort Ord. Great course and good times. I saw more hardtail 29ers than ever! Perfect bike for this area, though Alex from Rock Lobster was tearing it up on his CX bike!
Read my report here:
I think I made my point today...
... there's a need for a Beginner SS class. ;)
Ouch! that was a painful and humbling experience.
First race SS in Cat 2: I saw the field disappear in front of me in no time.
Finished 9th out of 11 few seconds behind 8th.
Even so I'm pretty happy with my time at 1:41 for the almost 20 miles, mere 10 min behind JL :p , and probably not to far from my times last year.
This course was fast and perfect for SS and by the 2nd lap I was really enjoying the berms and quick flowy sections. Fun!
Sunny day and great company to complete the picture.
Just a few shots:
Alex explaining to JL how the hell he's soo fast.
Becky on the Podium (hope your neck is ok)
Medals are pretty...
Wade, medal and beer
Nice write-up and congrats with winning the pro race.
It was indeed perfect condition. It was fun to be racing again. It had been too long.
Good to see many MTBR friends there. Alex finished second in cat 2 M 19-35. Well done!
It was good to see Tick racing again, even though he dropped out after 3 laps.
Marco was having fun on his single speed and didn't appear to be disappointed I passed him in the second lap already.
Now I understand why Aaron wanted to race beginner. Even I was faster than him going through the berms section.
The cat 2 M 45-54 group had 21 contenders. I finished 7th, just 5 seconds out of 6th (Mike Urbina, the Team Wrong Way guy, I was racing against the whole race, passed me inside in one of the last turns.) and 20 seconds out of 5th. If only I had started a bit faster and gotten onto that single track in second or third place, I might have won my first medal.
Oh well, in two weeks I'll try again. This time with new tires (Kenda block eights) and more pressure in my fork.
You do know that your fancy Reba WORLD CUP CARBON has a lockout? It even has a lever mounted up on your handlebars for old-man-inflexibility convenience.

The race was fun--a great way to spend Vday. Alex and team kept me company for my last lap talking about tires behind me... And then Alex had to pass me because I was too slow for his warm up lap.
I raced beginner, thinking that the collarbone break out-of-shape factor would make that a good place for me but think I'll race sport next time. Get my arse whooped but it will be good.
3rd in 35-44 Sport.
Stayed with eventual winner for most of first lap. Him pulling away a bit on climbs and I catching up on flats and descents, However when I started to get numbness around my lips I figured I better back off and hope he slowed down later. He didnt.
Was trying to motivate self to go faster when guy who got second passed me. I just couldnt get up the gumption to chase him (my big mistake).
After that just motored along with a single speeder motivating each other until the end.
All in all a fun race...though i was a bit tired coming into it. Average HR was 182 which I was not to happy with :( Wont make next one but hopefully the one after that.

My race went quite well, although I do feel a bit sore this morning. At the end of lap one myself and one other rider had pretty much ditched everyone from our age category and were busy reeling in the huge group of juniors who started a minute ahead of us.
Unfortunately for me, I could tell right away the other rider was stronger than me, especially on the climbs. If he hadn't crashed in the berms on lap 3 it wouldn't even have been close, but as it was I got 2nd place, trailing by only about 15 seconds.
Hope to see you all again in 2 weeks!
i had a blast, thanks for the photo MARCO, i was a little disappointed with my DFL in the cydlesdale class. But I also took 1st place too. That is the great thing about only one fat guy showing up to the race. Hopefully we will have more in the future. I did enjoy doing my parade laps.
Thank you to all the put this great race on.
Congrats sirkrameroy! Menso's dad has now earned the title of Menso's dad. Where's that video again?
Yeah, totally sweet race!
Showing up at 8am in the morning, boy was it cold! Foggy and a brisk, chilly wind had me regretting that I'd forgotten my knee warmers. I did a 1/4 lap warm-up and already had freezing toes and a snot-fest.
As expected, once the race started, the whole cold thing went away. I found myself probably in 15th place 1/4 of the way through the first lap but knew I was riding at the rate I wanted to. Started to feel annoyed that I'd done so well last week at the TBF race but was being mercilessly humiliated today.
Fortunately that all changed starting with the second lap. I was able to pass people throughout the race, sometimes 3-4 at a time on the short paved section. Found the energy to stand and pound all short hills and passed enough people to surprisingly come in 4th of I think 17.
Looking back its obvious my experience in racing the last couple years helped me manage my performance on the course better than the real beginners. That being said, Sport category is still a half season away IMHO.
Nice seeing all the old faces again ... too bad I forgot to bring my camera! Thanks for the beer Wade ... saved the day!
Might check out the SB Racing event at Harvey Bear this Saturday, but not sure about Sunday. MTB Challenge course is sweet but the Dirty Gears course at Fort Ord is also appealing.
I have a Reba World Cup Carbon fork? Wow, that's quite a hand me down. Thank you.

I think I need a Carbon seat post as well. Do you have one laying around?
I'm sorry, top 10 means you stay at Sport. Besides, everyone knows that there's no such thing as a beginner singlespeeder. Unless you're 5. :p

So anyway, who is this guy? I remember seeing the MTBR jersey at the beginning of the first lap but never again after that.
The top two in 35-44 beginner were some guy from Left Coast Cyclery and someone pimped out in a nice Hammer kit.
How did you find these photos NoBalance?
Found them from a Facebook friend who was tagged by Steve Anderson, who happened to have a link to his Flickr account on his Facebook profile.
Yeah, I am professional stalker, bro!
Oh yeah, here are some results ...
I had a good time. Did better than expected with 5th out of 12.
Took a few pics of the Sport race.
Giving the look in the first 100 yards...
sirkrameroy with a weird look, and rox following.
3 more to go dude...
Dan, is that a Carbon Sworks 29er HT? Wow.
Looks like it. I was busy snapping pics and picking off ticks. Didn't really pay too much attention.

My interpretation of the look on Alex's face:
"I got this in the bag."
Actually, I think it was more like "This is going to hurt!!" :)
