Broke the 10 mph barrier today

As anyone who has ridden with me knows, I am quite slow. Speed is muscle. The downside to lots of slow twitch muscle fibers is I don't put on muscle. Despite climbing more than half a million feet last year my thighs look like toothpicks. Since I have limited daylight this time of year I have been working on my speed on my Tuesday afternoon rides, and I also don't stop at all, even on four hour rides.

Today I finally broke the 10 mph barrier on my 27 mile ride! Not a big deal for most of you, but it is for me. It wasn't that long ago that I rode much shorter rides at New Melones mostly in my granny gear. My backup bike has 22/34 up front and today the 34 was just too small.

Funny - at first I thought you meant going above 10mph on some short section of trail . . . but 10mph average over 26 miles is great. Nice work.

Not a lot of climbing on that route.
Stupid, but sometimes witty. Occasionally brilliant. Slow and fat though.

Are you minimizing his achievement or comparing it to his usual rides?

Really? Seems pretty impressive to me as do most of his rides.

    Never again!

I achieved that speed by doing two things I never do: standing up, and pushing high gears. I can not remember the last time my knees hurt so much. Even with lots of Codeine and Motrin I've barely been able to walk today. And climbing stairs is almost unbearable. I'm going back to my usual tortoise pace, sitting down, and spinning in low gears. Besides, it irritated me that I only got in about 2 1/2 hours of riding.

Great job Mr. Wolf! You're still coming back after a layoff, correct? Keep up the good work, you will only get faster, stronger. Don't slow down!

I'd say that's a pretty big feat considering I'll climb about the same amount, half the distance, and average about half the speed.

Hmm, I guess that makes sense given the math, but yeah, the point is you're certainly moving faster than me!

Not really sure why that's such a big deal.

Edit: Oh, sorry, I thought I was in the Roadie forum. You're fast, dude! I can maintain 8 mph on s/t for a pretty long time--if it's flat.

That is a good pace for that trail, how many laps did you do? Now try Hogan whole different ball game.
