    Big Sandy Race 2017

The best race course you've never heard of is this weekend (3/25) a little east of Fresno. Almost all wildflower lined, lakeside singletrack and point-to-point format for everyone but the beastly experts and pros.

    Who is going?

    The Big Sandy

Areed. It is a really, REALLY good one.

If I wasn't fighting an illness (that caused me to DNF at the Cool race yesterday after only 1 lap), I would be there. Now I am not sure.

Sorry to here of your illness Ron I know you always tear it up @Cool! 👍
Long way to go for me but always wanted to do this Big Sandy venue. Mark LeShark(??) on here first told me about it. I'm only a Masters Sport rider but would feel I'd have to do the 38 miler to ustify drive and entry fee but not in shape to do it this early in ride season.
Wait whuuut, who did he tell you that!?!?....

Thanks man. I put in a first lap hot lap getting a gap on the Pro/Exp field of ~1 min 40 seconds, but then half way into the second lap I really started feeling ill. If I didn't pull myself, I would probably still be out there curled in a ball haha

Given the name "Sandy", I presume this place rides well after a rain. Can anyone confirm? I'm thinking of it as a way to escape the SC mtn mud-slop-trail-destruction-fest.

2012 had snow and rain and everyone seemed to love it!

The medium length course is still plenty beautiful and hard. And the entry fees go towards funding that trail system.

There's camping at the San Joaquin Gorge, free this year. It's a cool spot to camp; also the start point of the 'shorter' races. There's a pit toilet but apparently the potable water system is shut off.

It is a bit of a hassle shuttling back from the end to the gorge, but doable. Best if you can find someone to drive your car (or a car in your party) to Finegold Bay. That's true no matter if you camp or not!

Lots of updates on their FB feed; looks like they could use a few volunteers too.

The trails are great after a bunch of rain. There are sandy spots but it's not like riding sand near the coast. It's more decomposed granite than actual sand so it drains and rides well.

I wish I had time to train and race this event as I can ride to the start line from my house. Unfortunately it's just not in the cards these days given all of life's commitments.

Anyone looking to get away from their bogged out local trails should definitely come out for it. The downhill section at the halfway point for the pros is an awesome descent.
