Bald Mountain by Shaver Lake CA

Has anyone biked up the jeep trail at Bald Mountain by Shaver Lake?

    How would you rate it?

I've ridden that many times. It's a 4wd trail, so do not expect single track. It's a great place to explore however, just get off the main loop, and explore the rock (keep your sense of direction and location though).
One ride would be to just go out to the tower. Lately I've been entering from the north via Tamarack pullout on 168 instead of Rock Creek road. It's less climbing but the climb out of Rock Creek aint bad.
The trailhead off of Dinkey Creek road is hiking only. To heinous to ride anyway.

Just off the loop, looking south. I have explored in this vast rocky area a few times. It takes some planning to dive down into this area. Or you can do like I've been forced to do, double track back to the top. I'm sure there's a connecting 4wd trail somewhere at the bottom, just haven't found it yet.

There is a small oasis amongst the granite:

And if you make it to the lookout, you'll have this view:

Yes, if you have wings. Or if your name is Buckaroo Bonzai and have your oscillation overthruster with you.

Seriously, I believe you can see Shuteye Ridge from the lookout tower. But 007 is a hour or more drive away.

I rarely see 4x4s up there. I see tracks and occasional broken bits of car parts and discarded beer cans, yup, but rarely people. I do tend to ride on off hours, though.

    More exporation rides

I've been back to Bald Mountain twice recently and have become a bit obsessed with exploring the odd rock formations on this ridge. There's some cool stuff that is not on any maps, so I'll have to keep exploring. I have visited this balanced rock years ago, but forgot the location. Last weekend I finally stumbled on it again. Yeah.

I also found a connector trail that I mentioned previously, but it is not pretty. It ends in a hairball decomposing granite 20 degree slope descent, most people won't want or could not ride that so it's back to the maps.

    View from the first vista:

And I finally bumped into a bunch of 4x4s.

Sorry, I don't bother with GPS on this loop. (Although I do think the fun here is getting off the 4wd trail and exploring.). Here is a general description from the forest service:

The route is accessible from the south by taking Dinkey Creek Road east from Shaver Lake and at approximately 9.5 miles turning left on Rock Creek Road (9S09). Go north on Rd 9S09 for 3.5 miles to start of the route. Staying right at the first two intersections will put you on the more challenging lower loop. Stay left for the most direct and easier route to the top of Bald Mtn. To access from the north take Hwy 168 above Shaver Lake to the Tamarack Snow-Park, travel along Rd 9S09 for 3 miles to the intersection of Rd. 9S02. Take Rd. 9S02 south and you will come to the north trailhead in less than 10 minutes. This route is known as the "easy way" to the top of Bald Mountain. Stay right at the first intersection after the trailhead. Many high clearance trucks can reach the top going this way. Left will take you to the lower loop.
