Good job! 3rd Annual Fox Santa Cruz Mountain Bike Festival 4/14-4/15 2012

Festival website: Santa Cruz Mountain Bike Festival | April 14th and 15th, 2012 in Aptos, California.

Save the dates! Festival planning is underway, and MBOSC wants all you mob to mark off 4/14 & 4/15 on your calendars. As with last year, the title sponsor is Fox Racing Shox! Wow! The other generous sponsors so far are: Specialized, Scotts Valley Cycle Sport, Barry Swenson Builder, Dirt Rag, AMR (American Medical Response) and California's Adventure Sports Journal.

There will be events for everyone, of course. Fun shuttle rides, races for amateurs on up to pros, a pump track to play on, dirt jumping, skills clinics, awesome photographic opportunities and some of the coolest mountain bike-related paraphernalia on the planet.

This will most likely be the last time there will be a SCMBF that will take place on and around the iconic "Post Office" dirt jumps in Aptos. I know we all thought that last year was the last year, but this year is even more likely to be the last year. In other words, the dirt jump competition should not be missed!

And oh my Pliny, will there be beer. Yes folks, last year a disturbance was felt in the force - like thousands of thirsty mountain bikers crying out for more beer! The cries were heard.

Also, I probably shouldn't spill too many beans on this one just yet, but rumor has it (from good sources) that there will be an Enduro race in Demo! Yes, folks, you saw that right! Details are forthcoming, so you will probably want to check back here often for the latest juicy goss.

Here was last year's thread for fun pics and vids

Proceeds benefit projects and organizations that support mountain biking in Santa Cruz County. So, put it on your calendar!

I should probably be frank, now that I got your attention

there is a real limitation on the number of people that can be accommodated for the Enduro, so it may be a Pro/Elite event. I'm sad, too.

But, there will also be something called the "All Mountain Challenge". So, good things are in store. Stay tuned.

    Racing!

This is rad: The Bell Enduro race (first race ever in Demo) is ON. Woohoo! Thanks Bell!

Aside from the pro/elite Enduro, there will competitions for all levels. The pros will be racing for cash—at least 50% of the pro entry fee will go back to pro payout. Amateurs will be racing for some awesome bike loot, too!

Also, Gamut just signed on as a sponsor, as well.

Stay tuned for competition details and registration info...

    MORE racing, in style!

If you're not one of the lucky 50 who will get to race Demo this year, there is an even *better* opportunity. Strut your stuff on the short track where every move is visible to a crowd of adoring on-lookers! Come on, you know you want to put on your best skin suit and strut your stuff. It's a blast! There are a couple places to get air, even. Last year someone cheated in broad daylight. (joking, they didn't really cheat... just took a creative line...). Nice prizes and schwag for the top three, too!

Today is the last day to get $10 off event registration! Don't forget to sign up if you haven't already... I think I will go ahead and sign up for the short track race... All proceeds will benefit projects and organizations that support mountain biking in Santa Cruz County.

Also, volunteers are still needed, so if you'd like to help out, hang out with some new or old friends and be rewarded with some fun schwag, just send an email the volunteer coordinators at volunteer@santacruzmountainbikefestival.com.

coming up from the city, looks like parking will be trouble and the site recommends biking in

how safe is the valet bike parking? would i be able to just walk around the festival bike in hand?

The valet bikes will be kept under the watchful eyes of People for Bikes. My bike didn't get stolen last year. Actually, no one's bike got stolen. You can of course walk your bike around with you, too, but it might be inconvenient if you plan to also carry around beer/food/coffee.

Also, if you haven't seen it yet GoPro made this awesome dizzifying video of last year's Pump track pandemonium and 831 Jump Contest! Check it out...

If you want to sign up for a competitive event, the deadline for online registration is Wednesday! Just 2 more days. Events | Santa Cruz Mountain Bike Festival

There are also still some volunteer slots open - and there are some generous perks if you do a decent shift too, including a festival t-shirt, lunch, beer & raffle ticket! volunteer@santacruzmountainbikefestival

Bike valet is PeoplePower, they do bike parking for lots of events around Santa Cruz including Amgen (that was a ton of bikes) and the previous scmbf.

...and they do lots of other advocacy work for bikes around scruz, generally sticking to pavement.

We published our rider list for the Bell Super Enduro at Demo:

Super Enduro Racers | Santa Cruz Mountain Bike Festival

A lot of heavy hitters on this list. Come and spectate! Lots of media interest in this event.

No one is really going to know who wins the Enduro until we tabulate the results back at the festival. Awards ceremony at 5 pm (ish). Live band "Whogas" hits the stage for an after party and the beer garden will be extended until 7 pm. There will be an after, after party at the Brit but I can't confirm and deny this.

Should be a party. We definitely kicked it up a notch this year.

Here's the latest weather-related info from the FB event page:

Super Enduro: Running as scheduled. Any cancellation due to heavy rain between now and the race start will be posted Saturday by 7:30AM.
Short Track: Events run rain or shine.
Pump Track: The small track will be open for all events. The large track may be closed if it continues to rain.
Jump Contest: The jump park will be closed on Saturday to allow for drying of the jumps and maintenance for Sunday’s competitions, which will run on schedule. Try out the free Camp of Champions Big Air Bag or the pump track on Saturday!"

I don't know for sure, but my guess is that there would be some trail fairies out clearing any downed trees/branches from the downhill segments prior to the enduro.

Well if the race gets called an hour before it's supposed to start, looks like a big "group ride" is in order!

Similar route, just don't have to pay $ or be ET's "brah" to do it!

The race is still on? Why hasn't it been cancelled already? With over 2" of fresh rain and around 4 inches this week?

No one else is saying it so I will: that's just dumb. Even if all the race participants/organizers help out on trail work in the coming weeks, this is exactly the wrong time to have spectators along the trails. Lots of people biking in, stashing bikes off to the side, running around in the mud, etc.

I love Demo but I wouldn't even consider going Sunday, there won't be enough time for the trails to dry out. Tomorrow morning is going to be a mess.

Agreed! I know many people have spent A LOT of time preparing for and organizing this race, and I think it's an awesome thing for Demo. But 4 inches in 1 week (1.5 in the last 24 hours) is a lot of rain for already saturated trails. I wonder what this will mean long term, when the forest managers see that the first race out at Demo totally trashing the trails?

But then maybe I'm overestimating the amount of damage that would be sustained from 100's of spectators walking along, and 50 riders ripping down totally soaked trails.

This is second hand but I talked to one rider in Aptos this afternoon who said it wasn't too bad out there, just some scattered wet spots. We had a lot of sun and wind this afternoon and the festival area was drying out nicely. Demo only had about 1.5" yesterday and the trees are pumping water like crazy this time of year. I am sure there will be some wet areas but I don't think the trails will be totally trashed but who knows, we'll see if the event is going tomorrow morning.

conditions? thoughts on 'just plain' riding Sunday?

I have the opportunity to head down that way for a couple of 'regular' laps on demo tomorrow, Sunday afternoon.

    1) Would appreciate any reports on conditions post rain and post race

    2) Coming from up north, will I be able to park near the gate on Highland, or will there just be too many people out to make it worth bothering?

Won't have time to make it to Aptos, but am dying to ride demo if it's not going to be too much of a mob scene logistically.

    Thanks for any thoughts.
    Mike

Won't have time to make it to Aptos, but am dying to ride demo if it's not going to be too much of a mob scene logistically.

    Thanks for any thoughts.

Conditions were just fine yesterday! Of course there is the usual small puddles and slick spots here and there (right in front of the wood stunts!) , but it should be even better now.
Not sure what the scene will be like on Highland, I came up from the Aptos side.

Thanks to everyone who has come out and volunteered and participated and shared in the stoke of this festival. It is going awesomely! This was/is a great event and great fun! I got shown the door in the amateur women's short track, but I feel good about making them them work for it. Those ladies are tough, amazing, experienced riders and racers. "Amateur" deserves quotes around it.

Yep. TRc seems to be a theme amongst the winners, as Mary Moncorge had one, too I noticed.

Surely, skills and fitness played a small role, too.

i cruised by the festival on the way home from a road today.

I was pleasantly surprised in the what seemed like a doubling in size of the expo area. A lot more companies set up shop and were showing off their latest bits.
