Good job! 2018 Santa Cruz Bicycles Mother Load Epic! Pt-2-Pt stage race w/ a boat crossing!

First dibs registration opened today for last year's participants... and everyone who missed it can register starting tomorrow 3/15/18!

    Race Date: August 18th

Website/Registration: The Santa Cruz Bicycles Mother Lode Epic

I recall lots of people wished they had been able to race/participate in this last year. Now's your chance to not miss out. Last year it sold out at 200 riders. This year will sell out at 300.

Last year's thread: FLEA inspired point-to-point race... with boat shuttle! August 19th: Mother Lode Epic

Video recap of the 2017 event:

This is such a XC novel format, especially for those of you who like adventure but don't really "race". Yeah you gotta make it through each stage in a certain time but then you can rest, catch your breath, eat, rehydrate... then take off on your next stage. For competitive racers, some interesting strategies were figured out last year

    Looks so fun.

What if don't want to compete, but just ride and maybe have a beer in between stages?

I think several people did that last year. There are time cut-offs between stages, but as long as you're not totally lollygagging, you'd make every segment and have time to chill between stages. It'd be BYOB though... I think one aid station (at the boat crossing) served some adult bevs and State Parks got mad about it. Plenty of beer available at the end. Mraz Brewing provided last year's goods.

Here's last year's course... I think this year's is exactly the same:

https://www.strava.com/activities/1141901118 (courtesy of our local Velofix guy)

Most of the "work" is the first 2 stages. Nothing brutal in the 3rd and 4th stage... plus you get to catch your breath and refuel after each stage. Transitions are un-timed. Feeling gassed at the end of Stage 2 or 3? Chill out a little longer and recover with provided food and hydration.

And this can be a fun 2 person team event: Both riders drive to the start. Rider 1 knocks out Stages 1 and 2. Rider 2 has driven down to the Skunk Hollow area (end of Stage 2). After Rider 1 comes in, Rider 2 can head out on Stage 3 and 4. Rider 2 drives vehicle from Skunk Hollow area to finish area (Beals Point) to cheer Rider 1 in.

Noticeable. But doesn't seem to be stopping many people from doing their normal riding. Some days are less smoky than others.

It was brutal and awesome! Thanks to Clint and Jen for putting it on. I trained hard, lost 35 lbs and tried expert 41-44. I won sport last year and was accused of sandbagging which ended up being true when it was all said and done. Super stoked to get 2nd this year. Beat some very fast guys.

Such a fun, challenging and unique event. You could certainly tell that a ton of preparation went into this and we, as racers, were rewarded. I can't believe people were wake boarding or swimming across the 3rd transfer!

Such a logistical nightmare for Clintox but Clipped In Races and an army of volunteers pulled off a flawless event. It was SO MUCH FUN! Hard but fun. I love point-to-point races and this one is definitely the most unique.

Bus ride up to the start:

    Starting line:

This 76 year old wasn't the oldest participant! He knocked out the first 2 segments before calling it a day:

Shimano Speed Check... Lidar gun checking fastest speed:

Joey won fastest speed for men (36mph)... and took home a Shimano brakes set:

Well stocked aid stations between segments:

Whoops... there's a dab in the No Dab Challenge:

Walk of shame in No Dab Challenge section:

Pirate Power on Slammin' Balls section:

    Bike shuttle:

Earned a dropper post for doing some tricks on his ride to Granite Bay side of the lake:

    Double fun:

Dabber in No Dab Challenge #2:

    Close, but no cigar!

This guy won a Transfer dropper post for SWIMMING across the lake between Stage 3 and 4!

Ro-sham-bo competition for Stage Winners vying for some sweet Shimano swag:

Winner of the Santa Cruz Reserve wheelset (No Dab Challenge):

This guy raced on a cross bike... and was given a brand new Santa Cruz Blur-C for being epic!

This dude won a frame for being DFL!

Too many other prizes and awards to post.

Many of the incredible volunteers who helped pull this thing off. Thanks everyone!!!

Many more photos from Scott Williams: https://www.scottwilliamsgallery.com...her-Lode-Epic/

I'm not sure why there isn't a lottery to get a spot in this event, but to each his/her own
