Thanks for a great start for a Thanksgiving! It was great to meet so many familiar faces and catch up on the hilltop. I left Kennedy hill in elated spirit.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

    ****

Leaving the house at 6:30am. It was great to catch the sunrise while driving to the trailhead.

    Riding up the hill

Charlie and his annual pumpkin pie. Charlie, the familiar call "seawind!" was warm and welcoming.

The view half way into the climb- beautiful day!

    We covered the entire hilltop.

    That's us- mtbr!

So this year was special for me once again. After a rough summer, I came out with better appreciation for people. I didn't haul anything up but my camera. But I got stop a few times along the way and take some awesome photos. I had a couple dozen great conversations. I had a buzz going early but my photos still came out. Of course I had about 20 that were pointed right at the ground.

There was not a ridiculous amount of food at the top but there was an obscene amount of people. And there was a lot of love shared on this glorious day at the top of the hill.

Special thanks to the "pig" contingent!

My younger son, Garrett, announced a few weeks back he would be joining me on the Thanksgiving Day Turkey ride. As he had relatives visiting at his grandmother's house I was surprised until he told me he wasn't going to miss the pig.

Thanks to the crew...if you ever need help (besides pulling it up hill), give me a call!

I missed quite a few of the faces I see in the photos. I had no idea "the Seawind" was there and a number of others. When we did start to head towards the bikes and I was able to go 10 feet without stopping to chat with someone Garrett did comment on it.

The Schlacter family looked a bit more comfortable on the bike this year. Scott must be getting more practice pulling the boys around.

The bike with two mini adirondack chairs on back was awesome.

Patty looked great and totally deserved that shot in one of the pics.

Nate (I think that's the name) usually had a crazy hat but didn't wear it this year. I got Garrett to bring his so may-be next year (too hot for it this year).

Thanks to Snowjinky for the pbr.

It was fun...Garrett exhausted. Hard work and stuffed with pig he had to nap for an hour hefore heading out to see the family. He was good company.

I got to introduce my boss around who has said he would rather I introduce him as my business partner. Ha. I got him into mountain biking. We know who's really the boss (his wife).

Thanks to my sister for cooking...she got those genes along with the green thumb. We are still trying to figure out which ones I got!

And thanks to everyone who came out...always an awesome sight and lots of fun.

Despite not being on a bike, it was good to get out there and see everyone. And, it made me appreciate the hiker perspective, which I often ridicule. 90% of you are courteous and go out of your way to give hikers a good impression of mountain bikers. But there are some of you who have no idea.

It's proximity that is most frightening. I know you're in control of your bike and aren't going to hit me, but hikers who aren't mountain bikers don't, and when you get "close", which to a hiker may be different than your definition, it's a little scary.

Looks like a good time was had by all. I'm looking forward to riding it next year. And, thanks to the rangers for making a showing on a holiday.

Heard from a buddy that people were being radared at the bottom of the hill. That sounds pretty sucky for a Thanksgiving. Otherwise, looks like it was great fun.

I woke up this morning and thought how I wish I could be on the mountain bike again. The pleasure from yesterday morning's ride is lingering. Thanks all some delightful photos!

Francis- Thanks for the fun chat and congrats again on Cherubin's recovery. Any chance you will get her into mountain biking?

Kathleen- Oh no, sorry we missed seeing each other. We must have passed each other unnoticed. Hopefully I will see you on the trails soon.

    Marco- thanks for the photo!

Mountain Medic- that dummy bike is great fun and your little girl looks fearless. I can see the mountain biker spirit in her eyes.

Shiloh- Sorry to hear that the recovery hasn't gone faster. I look forward to our ride next year.

Great PR shot. Did you guys get any of the Midpen Board out for what looks like the most successful turkey fest ride to date? Just think how that e bike could have gotten some of those board members out there to enjoy the smilefest going on.

My third Turkey ride, and the sunniest so far! Great to share the passion with so many! Francis, I didn't get a chance to thank you for the MTBR site--it has been my bible of information as I built up my new bike and return to the dirt this year! And yes, I need to get a pair of MTBR socks so I can represent a bit, and can be pushed up the hill by you, ha!

It says a lot about this group. I went back up Saturday morning. There was no sign that hundreds had been up there 2 days before. Only litter I could find, (and I was looking) was a banana peel at the junction of Kennedy and dogmeat.

So I have to ask if you're a cyclist in the area and did not come to this event:
"What were you doing between 8am and noon that was so important that you couldn't attend the LG Turkey ride?"

    And more puzzling:
"Why were you in such a hurry that you're rushing home down the Kennedy trail at 9am??"

I'm just saying . Come and hang out next year!

Here's my Turkey Hauler Awards of 2009.

    1) Scott Schlacter aka mtbhead - had Liam in front on an Ibert and Riley on the trailabike. When he got up to me, he whipped out some bread and said. "Francis, make a pork sandwich!"
    From 2009-11-26

    2) Michael Ku aka Mountain Medic - He's a firefighter coming back from an injury and he hauled up his Surly Big Dummy with custom racks and seats. Plus his daughter and donuts. They were so popular that his daughter started charging $5 to these big dummies that wanted to pose with her on the extra seat.
    From 2009-11-26

    4) Bong - he towed the pig. The Pinoys chipped in to buy the pig. And Nate built a custom rack to transport the pig. And little man Bong towed the beast. Look at all his friends here right behind him cheering him on. Or heckling him...

it's true - i got stopped on the way down, towards the end of dogmeat. 25 mph in a 15 zone - i guess my speedometer is a bit off

the ranger let us off with a warning "for PR purposes", but it was still an unnecessary jerkoff move. he had to give us a speech about how 25 is supposed to be an automatic ticket and how we were going to crash and lay bleeding on the trail because they wouldn't be able to get to us in time, etc, etc.

It's ok. While the law is no good, this is the single most obvious day to enforce it and follow it. There a ton of beginners, trailers, riders/hikers who've had a beverage up there.

Let them show a presence and just say thank you. They just wanted everyone to slow down. They issued a total of zero tickets.

Rangers are people too...especially on Turkey Day!

First off, I don't think there is a law against drinking and riding but one rider managed to miss the turn three times heading back down towards Kennedy Road. Garrett, my 16 year old, didn't have anything good to say about the display as hikers were passed too close with this display of misjudgement. Good for all of us that the rider made it down the hill ok.

Anthony, a ranger in the St Joe's area stopped as Patrick and I were walking down St Joe's on Sunday (that would be the 19 year old) why we were walking instead of riding. I was surprised he recognized us and then he asked if we had done the turkey ride. It seems he did it (this being his first time with the day off in years) but he started about 9am or thereabouts. He said he saw 30-50 people at the gate socializing. He rode up after stopping for a bit.

I think it's great to have rangers out there not only when they are on duty but on their own time too...knowing that it's a great time!

Third guy, if thats the one with the camel pack would be me. Thanks, that pig and trailer took some effort to get up the wall.

The day before Thanksgiving I realized I had the opportunity and a sudden desire to hit the
    dirt.

I announced my plan to drag our son up the hill in his trailer. Anne wasn't down with it, but
I was committed. She said, "I'd feel better if I was there with you." Wow, I hooked her into
    riding Kennedy without even trying!

So late Wednesday evening, a mad scramble ensued (and resumed for me at 4 AM) to get
the tandem switched over from road mode, drive 35 miles to find the correct trailer bracket,
get our riding gear collected, cleaned and ready to go, and mount the tandem adapter to
    the roof rack.

See, due to various reasons, I've been off the bike since fall of '08, and Anne hasn't ridden
since summer of that year. In the interim, our bike stuff has been boxed, moved and
stored all over. It was a fustercluck putting this all together with so little preparation.

We started from Camden & Hicks at 8:30 -- a full two hours later than planned -- and the
agony of too many months off the bike started to bite almost immediately.

This was Anne's first turkey ride, but she was great, thanks to the fun comments and
positive vibe from the rest of you whizzing past us. That plus the lack of any pressure to
finish (straight climbs are great 'cause it's no problem to ride until zonked, turn around and
become a gravity bomb) really made this a fun outing.

We made it as far as the tree in the trail before we hit the clock and had to turn back.
That's OK -- we were walking a lot at that point, and my quads were on the verge of
    cramping.

I want to mention that I've ridden this event probably 5 times in the past, always coming
back with the goal of getting Anne up there. The photos from '07 helped Anne (and me!) to
get on board with the tandem, which we've both enjoyed a lot! This was one hell of a
challenge for us to tackle on our first outing after so long, but we both needed that spark to
get us back into riding. Now that the urge is there, we just need to make the time. And a
    happy Thanksgiving it was!

You ARE crazy! This whole ride is crazy. That's what makes it great.

Sorry we missed you. This year, I had no trailer but I still stopped 8x on the way to the top.

What was MOST important is that Anne saw Bong with the pig at the trailhead. That sealed the deal -- she'll make it to the top next year.

I'd like to take a look at your photos but the link isn't working for me. Is it me, or is the link bad?
