Zepplin, Beatles, Floyd are all up there...but for my personal favorites, the closest one gets to main stream are SRV and Zappa. Social Distortion, Sabbath, Dead Kennedys, Napalm Death, Skatalites, Wu-Tang Clan, among others are on my list. Mostly driven by mood, songs I enjoy, etc.
If I was to go purely on musicianship SRV is still at the top, but the list may be quite different.

SRV definitely a classic. Have you ever listened to Joe Bonamassa?

Being a younger generation metal fan I cant say LZ would be the best evar (sic) since there are too many variables involved. Rock would definitely be behind w/o them. Their inspiration is/was tremendous.
Personally I like Rush a tad more than LZ. Not much else for classic rock. NO Stones. NO Floyd. I prefer music to be on the upbeat side. I fall asleep on the slower stuff. Oh, and I did smoke a lot of weed and STILL dont like Pink Floyd.
Iron Maiden would definitely be in my list.
I'm a ******bag in real life so I dont have to be one on the interwebz.
I think any band that you walk into say a store and hear a song you've never heard and say within the first minute-that sounds like .... playing this song-is a good musician/group.
I'm a huge Zeppelin fan, too bad all the theft accusations. Doors, Who, GNR, Alice in Chains etc. I've considered shelling out the money to do one of those meet the artist before the concert tickets for Brian Setzer, but just too expensive. I think his guitar style, choice of guitar-just so raw and the ability to front a 18 piece orchestra with just a electric guitar going through a vintage Bassman amp and echoplex-mad skills.
Very hard to pick one without some rules. Therefore, if the requirement were to be -
If you could only listen to that band the rest of your life, you'd be OK with it.
My list would include (in no particular order):
- Floyd
- Zepplin
- Thin Lizzy (extremely underrated)
- The Police
- Rolling Stones
- Beatles
- Lynard Skynard
- Neil Young
- Fleetwood Mac (very wide range of styles including all the pre-Buckingham/Nicks days)
Zepplin is the foundation of everything pure in the name of Rock N Roll!!! But coming up in a close second are a few of my favorites:
Parliament Funkadelic
The Black Keys
The White Stripes
Santana
The "Stones"
PinkFloyd
RHCP
Bob Marley & The Wailers
Rush
Eric B. & Rakim
& Classic House music!
