XT Brake Bleed - Made Mistake, Now Cannot Push the Pistons Back

First brake bleed. Well, things were going well (so I thought) until I was squeezing the lever without realizing my bleed block (a 10mm allen) had fallen out. I must have knocked it out at some point without noticing.

Now I cannot for the life of me get the pistons back into the caliper. They are spaced about 5mm apart and will not budge. I have accidentally squeezed my levers with the wheel off before, so I have reset the pistons before with no problems.

I tried having the screw cap on the lever open while trying to push the pistons back in, to no avail. I'm sure that by now the line has quite a bit of air in it too, since I had fluid flying at one point...

I did a quick search and couldn't find anyone as dumb as I am, or at least one willing to admit in public that they did something this dumb.

Anyway, and thoughts/comments/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Sarcastic comments about my incompetency are fine, too.

    Thanks!

There is a pdf from Shimano about resetting your pistons which you can Google. Obviously make sure the brake line is open meaning top cap off etc and make sure pads are off! Make sure you push them back with something plastic like a thick tire lever.

My other suggestion is to wiggle the lever side to side a little as you push it back, and may smear a little mineral oil on the side of the piston to help. Once they are back in clean only with iso alcohol, no drinking.

Thanks! A little mineral oil, wiggling the lever and some patience did the trick.
