Update on crappy Avid XX brakes

Now Avid is saying they had a run of bad hoses and are sending my LBS
replacement hoses. And even including a free new chain for my time!
That's after my LBS telling them I have no confidence in there product and I want them to
give the LBS credit for what is an inferior POS brake set up.

I'll continue to post as the saga of the XX brakes continue.
If you want great lightweight high end discs go get Formula R-1s.
Thank you for your concern and kind thoughts my many MTBR brake fans.

A friend just went through certification by SRAM. He was told that the XX's require bleeding/fluid flush EVERY 6 MONTHS, due to the fluid wanting to absorb air or water!!!

All brake fluid does this.....including your car. Do you flush your car's brake system every 6 months?

I do every two years on my vehicles.Brake fluid absorbs at least 10% moisture in that time and your car has a fluid reservoir several hundred times larger than your bike. Now all we need are speedbleeders like I put on all my four wheeled vehicles, it makes changing brake fluid a one man job that takes twenty minutes. My other pet peeve is people using brake fluid from a container that was already opened.I feel brake fluid, recipe for contamination.

That's probably what thwarted his spellchecker.

LS - how 'bout a link to the original thread?? Your comments are completely out of context without it.

It's not clear whether Avid has been stepping up to the plate trying to fix your issues or not. It seems they are, yet you're still bashing them.

Did you keep the free chain or give it back due to low confidence in the product?

I have no experience with XX brakes, but I have Juicy Ultimates on one bike and XO's on another, and both do exactly what they're supposed to do.

Completely incorrect. DOT 5 does not absorb air / moisture. It's silicone based.

I think this is the first thread: really informative. Puts lots in context.
Third time the charm for Avid XX brakes??

    Barry
Yeah well, that's just, ya' know, like, your opinion, man.

I wouldn't have linked to that either.

Good luck, LS. Hopefully the new hose does it for you. You have to admit that Avid is excellent with warranty issues.

Do, however, give some thought to why the LBS was willing to send you home with a brand new bike they absolutely knew wasn't working properly, and with such a vital part of the bike with respect to your safety.

AHH....Yeah DOT 5 is silicone based.....However, SRAM/Avid uses DOT 5.1. 5.1 is glycol based just like DOT 3 or 4. NO bike disc brake uses DOT 5 that I am aware of.
However, Definitely not defending SRAM. They have more documented issues with their brakes than anyone else. Gobbling noises, bad seals, vibration issues...blah blah blah. I really think they have to figure out the real issues and fix em.

Seems to me the online complaints per brand regarding brakes is fairly proportional to the number of units in the market per brand. You have sumin' that indicates otherwise?

    yeah

Honestly, I have avid brakes on both of my bikes and I don't have any issues. Try changing your rotors. The warbling noise you hear a lot of times comes from the rotor arms passing the surface of the pad. I mean if you think about it's a brake. It's metal getting pressed up against metal, it's normal for some noise to occur.

I was just pointing out that DOT 5 being silicone based didn't absorb moisture/ air. I know avid uses DOT 3/4/5.1, which certainly does absorb all that chit.

My three bikes are full Sram XX equiped and as far as brakes, they have been working excellent for the past 8 months... the only issue was with the Sram XX World Cup SID, but like Pedalphile said Sram have one of the best costumer service out there, got the replacement part within 3 days and also some free stuff....

    Great company..
