Trek 850 help - Rear Brake

I was given a Trek 850 and have been going over it. I just replaced the bottom bracket. I was just trying to runa new rear brake cable and had a problem. On the model that I have there is a metal tube right at the seat post tube that the rear brake cable is to be run thru. Do I just run the bare cable thru it, or try to find some cover to fit in there? I tried to put the cover that came with the new cable into the tube but it would not fit. Help?

    Thank you.

The housing should go into the noodle. The diameters have changed a couple times so you may have to go to the LBS with noodle in hand and get the right size.
