    switching to disc brakes

Depending on what you have it may be fairly cheap or way more expensive.

Lets look at hubs first, is the non drive side of the hub have an area to install a disk? It should have 6 equal distant holes that can take bolts. If you don't have this, your wheels need to be upgraded, that could run you around 100 for a bargin basement wheelset.

Next look at frame, I'm pretty sure it has disc tabs on the fork and frame. Pretty much every mtn bike made has those mounts.

So last question is hydros or mechanical. Mech whould be cheaper, and would use current brake levers.

Aside from that, cables and housing and you are good to go.

I wouldn't spend too much on an upgrade like that. I would leave the rear as is.

Start with the front, see how she likes that.

Dialed in rim brakes do a fine job stopping a bike.

Thanks guys. It looks like her wheels wont accept discs. shes a new rider so she doesnt know the difference of stopping power between the two. i notice it when i take her bike out (its much faster than my 2011 GT Transeo 2.0). being overprotective, i worry about her not being able to stop on a dime like i can. i think i'll take Learux's advice and just put a front wheel on.
i'm a lifelong vintage motorcycle guy and have had a few bikes with a front disc/rear drum set up and liked it so i don't know why i didn't think of it for her bicycle.
now...any thoughts on front wheels to start looking at?
thanks, and sorry for all the dumb questions. i'm not yet a seasoned bicyclist.
