SLX + IceTech a good upgrade for Avid Exlixir 5S?

    Hey everyone,

I've been less than pleased with my current/stock Avid Elixir 5S system. It works okay, but the modulation isn't great and the power starts to fade after longer descents.

I've been thinking about swapping to a set of SLX brakes with IceTech rotors, but have also been looking into Magura MT6s.

I just won a new set of Enve wheels, so I'm ready to pull the trigger on the brake upgrade.

Is this a good plan? Are there other options that I should be considering?

I have slx brakes on my hardtail without Ice tech. I have had elixer 5s. I like the slx way better. Much nicer feel.

I've used and serviced many Avid products for many years. They were great for the time, especially compared to other stuff available at the time (especially when considering cost). However, with the new Shimano stuff, the bar has been raised. I've used SLX and XT and they are head and shoulder above pretty much anything else out there when it comes to performance, maintenance and cost.

I'd take the SLX's over the Elixer 5's any day. Now if you were comparing the Shimano brakes to the 4 piston Avid Trail series (X0, X9, X7), you'd have a harder decision to make.

This for my hardtail that I mostly ride XC with a little bit of gnarlier trails, but its definitely not something that I'd need a 4-pot system.

For my trail bike that I'll eventually get, it will be a different conversation.
