Shimano XT Rear Brake Lever Soft

I have a what may be a 2009 Shimano XT disc brake lever set. I do not get to ride often.

My rear brake lever is soft on the first pull. It squeezes all the way in on the first try.

If I pull multiple times it gets firmer.

Is it a brake pad issue, a need for more fluid or air in the lines?

    Any quick fixes? Thank you

Air is a bad thing to have in hydraulic brakes.
