Shimano M486: use OEM replacement pads, or "other guys?"

I have the Shimano M486 hydro setup, and was looking for replacement pads before I need them. Having never bought disc brake pads before, I need to know: all things being equal, is there much of a difference in buying Shimano brand pads, or some other pads? Does anyone know of other brands that will work just a well as Shimano?

    many choices

There are lots of good aftermarket brake pads. You can get different materials as well, depending on what you want or need. Make sure your rotor can use metallic pads if you go that route. Some Shimano rotors have "Resin Only" or something like that on them, which limits your choices.

That being said, I have used Clark, Kool Stop, and Shimano on my Shimano hydros. They all work well.
