    shimano m486..?

id imagine they're not that great.. but how bad are they?

i have hayes9 xc's right now, with 8/6 inch rotors and im happy enough with them. any power they lack is made up with the big rotor up front.

    are m486's comparable?

I have them on mine with metallic pads and for my weight (130#) they stop me. I was not fond of the stock resin pads. Not enough bite.
IMO, if you get good pads and rotors, they perform just fine.

M486's - better modulation then the hayes9's, less power though

Mech Tetro IO, Winzip dual action, Shimano XTR 975, and 4pot XT M755. Each had different rotor/sizes and pads, so can't really compare them apples to apples.

If theyre anything like the m485 Id say they are not very good brakes, they freeze up when cold (-20c), you cant really adjust anything on them, gets rotor rub after like 2 days, generally annoying and you cant depend on them. A few weeks ago I was going down a little hill, braking at the bottom and all the sudden something happens with the rear brake, I thought they were broken, just clonked up, and after that the lever goes much further in, I think air was sucked in to the system.

But they actually did work without any adjusting or tweaking for 2 months straight, except for the rotor rubbing which is built in

does anyone know if you can swap the brake cable onto the other valve on the brake. Right now there are 2 and they both look the same, ones for bleeding i believe. I was wondering if anyones tried swapping the two.
