Old bike - Y brake to V brake conversion HELP??

Ok, I bought an old bike (Specialized Stumpjumper) on the cheap. It had center-pull brakes on it.

I bought some Avid Single Digit 5s and put them on.

The problem is there is way to much play in the brake lever.

I have tried all the combinations of spacing for the pads and tweaked with just about everything that can be adjusted and have had no luck.

There is not a lot of space between the rim and the pads.

The levers are OLD Shimano XT STI.

    Any suggestions??

All I can think is that the levers pull a different length then V-brake levers?

V brake levers pull differently than canti levers. I recomend the levers that match your brakes. avid makes some nice stuff.
