    Old Avid Disc Brakes

I have a set of old Avid mechanical disc brakes, from the first or second year they came out. When I got them they felt nice and smooth. Now even after swapping out the cables and housings, they feel hard to clamp down. They work alright and I am unsure as to whether the feel has really changed over years of use. The current feel is nothing compared to that of Avid mechanical disc brakes on new bikes (2012). Is something wrong with my brakes, or did Avid change something along the way, i.e. 2000-2012?

No, I haven't. Can you give me any tips? I can't really see how the lever/piston is removed from the rest of the unit. It looks like there is a allen set screw on the lever side of the unit. It also looks like there are two allen head bolts holding the two sides of the unit together. Most of the pressure feels like it is from the return spring and the action feels smooth.
