Newb Question, Disc Rotors rusted. Best way to care for them?

So I bought a Novara Aspen Mountain bike for $50. Everything is like new except for the Spokes were mostly broken off, Wheel needed a little Truing and looking at the bike, The rotors looked about 15% rusted. I am thinking of sanding them, if I do, what grit sandpaper should I use? Anyone have similar problems with the rotors before? Thank you

i would just do about 20 hard stops on a nice flat road and see how they looked after that.

if i really wanted to sand them i would use 220 wetordry, wetted with water.

Hopefully rust is just on the surface. Lightly resurface the brake pads as well.
