Which is the more powerful brake, Hope Tech M4, or XTR M985 race?

does anyone have any experience of both brakes? I'm currently using the Hope Tech M4.

Is it just me, or are these brakes not really comparable at all?? XTR is a XC race brake while the M4 is more all mountain type stuff.

maybe, but at the french MTB mecca that is Morzine, there seemed to be as many people running the new XT or XTR. if the XTR has the power & reliability of the hope M4, but at a lesser weight, then I'll make the change..

According to the 2011 Bikeradar brake tests the Hope Tech M4 brake is more powerful than the Shimano XTR M985 race brake in the dry. In the wet the XTR M985 Race brake actually performs better until you get to high lever pressures. The XTR M985 Race brake in the Bikeradar tests produced similar performance in both wet and dry.

Who makes the strongest 2 piston hydraulic disc brakes?

A lot of that is likely to be down to the stock pads. I'm not too sure which stock pads the Hope Tech M4 comes with. I think that the XTR M985 Race brake has resin pads as stock (The XTR M988 Trail brake comes with metallic pads).

That's the older version of the Hope Tech M4 brake. The newer 2012 Hope Tech Evo M4 brake with its revised brake lever is claimed to have an additional 15% power over the 2011 Hope Tech M4 brake:

    Tech Evo M4 - Tech Evo M4

I recently upgraded from a set of 05 XT's to the 2012 XT's. They are not even in the same ballpark. True one finger braking, adjustable levers, good modulation, but just awesome power and no fade. I ride mostly XC but did some shuttle runs with these in Durango in October and they were all the brake i could possibly need. I can't comment on the m4's. I'm running 160's on my set up.
