Mixing old brake fluid with new one

I just did the full bleed of my brakes for the first time. What I did was just emptying the syringes over the bottle with the new brake fluid and mix the old fluid with the new one.

Is this a big no-no or I can reuse brake fluid with no issues? The fluid was less than a year old inside the brakes (Avid DOT 5.1).

NO, you will now need to throw away the new fluid. Brake fluid is prone to absorbing water, which is one of the reasons you replace it. You CANNOT reuse fluid, and you CANNOT mix old with new.

What do you mean by mix? I drain out as much of the old fluid as possible then push the new fluid through until it flushes out the old fluid, is that what you did?

No. What I did is once the bleed was over, I let the remaining (old) fluid in the syringes to go back with the new fluid bottle that came with the avid bleed kit. Basically because I don't know what to do with old fluid, as I suppose trowing it to the sewage is a big sin.

From what nov0798 advises I'll let the fluid apart from the new one and see if my car mechanic can take care of old fluids...

solution: throw out avid bottle with old/new mix of fluid + buy more dot 5.1 for the next bleed.

I just empty the old fluid onto paper towel or an old rag and discard.
