Hydraulic newbie question on adjusting levers

I have XTR hydraulic brakes on my new enduro and have never had hydraulic brakes before, coming off of Avid mech's. How do you adjust how far the levers come in before the pads engage the disc? I want a stiffer feel to the levers as they are taking more and more pull before the pads engage the disc.

If the contact point is not consistant you have to bleed the brake lines, you have some air in the lines that will make it feel spongy or vapor lock the calipers on heavy braking. If the handle is consistant but too close to the bars there is a hex screw on the handle pivot to adjust the reach, well at least there is on the '04 XT's, good luck

Does the distance between pads and the rotor also change when adjusting the lever?
