How much new Fluid will I need to do my Hayes bleed? Does 4oz do one brake?
Hey, about ready to do some much-needed bleeding of my Hayes HFX-9's.
The bleed kit comes with 4oz ... I'm guessing that only does one brake? So do I then need to buy some more DOT 4 to do the job on both?
I'd rather not pay for shipping twice, if possible ... so if I need more fluid, I'd prefer to know now ... plus, how well does the stuff store? If I buy 12oz and don't use it all, can I save it? Or once I break the seal, do I lose any shelf-life?
New to this - thanks for the help.
Trot down to your local auto-spares and buy a 500ml bottle of Motul DOT 4 or similar.. any glycol based DOT 4 fluid will do...
It's more than enough....
There's enough in the 4 oz. bottle for both brakes with some to spare.
Turn the master cylinder upward so the flat surface with the bleed plug is horizontal with the ground.
Take your time, make sure the calipers is free of bubbles then worry about the master cylinder. Don't push the fluid through too fast as this creates micro bubbles.
Tech tip, once you have a nice solid stream coming out without bubbles, get a friend to slowly rotate the handlebar from left to right while you continue to squeeze. This will usually find another small bubble.
