Elixir R lever weak, almost touches bar

My front brake lever which is a Avid Elixir R almost touches the bar before the pads make contact. Recently when the bike was on my car rack with the wheel removed the front brake lever was bumped. So when the front wheel was installed the pads would drag on the disc constantly. I used a tire tool to spread the pads back open and reinstalled the wheel.

Now the brake lever is very weak and almost touches the bar before the brakes actually start to apply. I repeatedly cycled the lever but it never got any better. I went for a ride hoping it would get better over time, but it never did. When the front wheel was removed and the lever was bumped, no fluid leaked out of the caliper/pistons, so there shouldn't be any air in the system.

Is there a way to reset the lever and get good modulation/feel back in the lever? (The pads are probably 50% worn)

If you pushed the pistons all the way back in, its probably too far. Take the wheel back off and carefully bump the lever again but watch the pistons. Allow them to come out a hair, this will account for that 50% wear. If that doesn't work, bleed. They can still get air in even if no fluid leaks out.

Also, don't push the pads back in, take the pads out and push the pistons directly.
